A recipe sent to me from Patreon Member Quarll on how to make Homemade Tacky Glue.
I make a batch and do some side-by-side comparisons against other commonly used PVA glues.

I was realatively surprised at how it worked just as well as Aleen's

I was a bit iffy about trying it at first, but was pretty happy with how it turned out

I feel that I am getting typecast as the angry brick guy XD That said, this was a good set of experiments and the results pretty much lined up with what I was expecting. The matt finish compared to the raw glue is down to the particulate corn starch in the mix. The comparative strength also makes sense in that the main difference between Aileen's Tacky Glue and Elmer's is the increased amount of water in the latter. I'm not sure if there's another way to dehydrate it slightly before application (the effort is definitely not worth it) but after some water loss the strength of the bond should be similar for the same volume. Cornstarch traps some of the water, resulting in a stronger bond compared to Elmers. It would be interesting to see how durable this is over time as the starch will eventually release the water, but I suspect the release would be so slow that it's not going to be of any significance - if the application is not very thick it should evaporate easily, if it's very thick it's just going to be sealed in. In general I prefer to use wood glue, mainly because it's available in construction quantities that generally work out much cheaper. However, these tests tell me that school glue would work great as a base for non-adhesive applications such as making paper clay, which also uses corn starch. Also, mod podge is PVA + varnish, so technically you could make your own out of elmers by adding some varnish to the cornstarch mix :)

I got type cast as the baby head guy (no idea why🤔), so love the angry brick guy tag. As far as the experiments goes. I wanted them to be done in a very common use way for most crafters, so bricks and area gluing was it. I figured it was the cornstarch particulates that caused the matte finish and the accelerated dry time. I actually considered using Mod Podge as a 5th test, but it's most commonly used as a sealer and not an adhesive in the crafting world

@@dirtybasementterrain Baby head guy huh? I wonder why XD Re. mod-podge, that's what it's designed to do, as I understand it. Its primary use case is decoupage, so it's not even meant to be used as a structural adhesive.
