HOW TO Make Homemade Trencher for Irrigation Pipe, Cable Wire, Invisible Fence

Just a little idea I came up with to get 1" poly pipe buried on an irrigation installation I am doing

I built one similar to this 25 years ago but used a 4” piece cut from an old backhoe bucket and bolted to the side of the loader bucket. Did the same with the opposite side of the backhoe bucket as to be able to trench from either side. Put a bend on it as to take the tailings and throw them off to the side of the ditch leaving a nice clean ditch that was about 12” deep. Perfect for sprinkler systems.

Great hack! I need to do something fairly similar, and I happen to have a New Holland T1510 4wd with a loader, and three-point .. so I'm glad to see that a ripper will work well for this sort of thing.

It worked. Moved to a new place-old farmstead. Has a thin layer of soil over gravel/rocks then sandy loam. Been kicking around ideas on how to plow rows. This gives me something to look at. No Bobcat or anything, just my Jeep but it is doable with enough Redneck Engineering.

I do something similar to lay pex water line and bury UF wire, but I use a 3 point sub soiler (just a bigger version of this tipper tooth). I drilled a hole on the back to attach the wire or pipe and can bury it up to 18” deep. The tooth welded onto the bottom creates a channel underground and the wire has no resistance as you pull it thru. I can easily bury a 300’ roll of 3/4” pex.

I just bought a bottom plow for my garden that goes on the 3-point hitch and realized that it would make a great tool for doing shallow trenches like this. I have plans to run water and data cables out to my shop and pool area and I'll probably use that to dig most of it. I can get about 18" deep or so I figure and it just flops the dirt off to the side. Might be a good option to make a mount for your skid steer for one of those. Would save you even more time. No mucking out the dirt by hand.

you can put a leader on that trenching spade and pull your pipe or cable right into the trench while you go, no need for additional steps. just have the spool set up to unreel

Strap a 1.5" 90 degree EMT conduit pipe onto the back of the hook, and you can FEED the poly pipe thru it INTO the bottom of the trench as you go - just need to rig something on top to hold/spool the poly pipe, and whammo - easily done, just need to finish covering . . .!

I think you could have attached the pipe holder mesh sock to pull the pipe thru the ground. I don’t have a skid steer so I use shovel and trencher

I welded an Atv hitch attachment that has a 2x2 steel square tube adjustable height attachment. Originally wanted an old fashioned garden hand plow the big curved blade but couldn't find one so settled on a flat shovel. Cut off handle and welded sideways at about 20⁰ angle to slice through dirt/roots and sorta makes a V trench and pushes dirt to side. Then a regular garden "hoe" cut off sides to leave about 3" wide and it makes a great trenching tool to clean out or leave a flat bottom

I used to have an old 7 series BCat and thought of something similar. Never tried it since I also had ditch witches as well and often clay soil conditions would have stalled most wheeled equipment. Generally, the level of effort (not pulling the intended conduit at the same time vs cleaning out the trench by hand) and any need for depth or for inspectabiliity that is your limitation.

It might work with a vibratory plow blade. It has a solid cone that you pull through the ground with the pipe in a pulling finger. It could work pretty well.

I just use the bucket on the loader. It does 7 ft at a time down to 12" + if needed.

Weld a tube to the end and a real holder on top that holds the coil. So as you rip it the tubing stays down in there so it's all 1 motion. Like the big ripper dozers

My area it freezes good and almost all irrigation companies bury their lines above the frost line. They blow them out prior to winter.

Yes that was the plan, however how about I made more profit because I saved $300 rental and 2 hours of driving to rental place and fuel (to/job/to/back) the machine was already on the job …. It’s just showing another option in certain situations someone may try. If you have watched any of my other videos you will see that I usually rent a ditch witch pipe puller on irrigation jobs

You could take one fork off your fork lift (if you have one) and use that as a trencher. It's great to pop bushes out of the ground as well.

Why go through all this trouble? Just rent a ditch-witch and it will pull wires and sprinkler pipes with ease. I had 6 sprinkler zones of pipes pulled in less than 30 minutes.

Don't get me wrong if it was an existing lawn in good shape I am renting a machine. But for some new lawns this works great and fast for almost no money.

I bought this thing from Amazon. It didn't work. And for a reason. I ran it over green grass with the soil on the wet side. After I chewed on the whole thing and after watching all sorts of videos... suddenly this just came to mind. A backhoe, an excavator with that foot-wide digger that scoops out dirt. Imagine instead of that blade you have. just being straight like that, its end is actually desgined like that of an excavator scoop. The loading bucket on your rig has enough tilting up and down that such a design can easily behave just like an excavator digging scoop or whatever they call it. Just a two inch or 4 inch wide deal and there it is. The bucket on my 8N ford tractor has lots of tilt.
