HI Justin. so I grew up with listening to classic house ever since it began around 1987 1088. Thank you for the in depth video on how to make classic house or just house music. I made tracks before but I had no idea about key element of house music and that is the bassline and the melody are on the same notes/ key. I know there is tech house, deep house but nothing can beat the vibe of classic house music and acid house. Once again thank you.

The tip to only use one oscillator is pretty good - I don't think that's a 'hard and fast' rule but it's good because it will force you to keep it simple. The phase cancellation he talks about only happens when two oscillators aren't in tune (detuning will result in a 'fatter' sound but will have some phase cancellation). Remember, house music isn't necessarily using the most high tech instruments and super high quality sounds, it's about the groove and the feeling. So play around with the groove of the hi hats and the chords and bass, and if it doesn't feel right don't be afraid to move stuff around. Another tip he doesn't mention is that in general, you want to avoid putting bass notes on the quarter notes of the measure (when the kick drum hits). Again, this is not a hard and fast rule, but if you focus on the 16th notes AROUND the kick and snare, with swing, it'll feel much more syncopated and groovy.

Just recently learnt about the Groove pool option in Ableton.. Game changer for drums so much more realistic sounding but so much simpler to achieve

Hi, thanks for the crystal clear example. I am from the UK and the 90s house music era was so great. Now I bought an interface (initially for vocals) I am taking advantage of the free ableton software. Thus to say, I was searching KZbin how to make music and it seems ii got lucky! As some other people have sat through hours of turorials and seem to be happy with your straight and to the point video as do I. As I am a TOTAL Novice, I have a question for anyone reading this post? Are the tracks you use, are they Audio tracks to start with or midi tracks? OR how many of each do you use? ANY advise would be appreciated, as I woudl liek to know how to set it up correctly.. ie so that i can do a tidy job. Ok well even if noone writes back, thanks for the knowledge.. ;)
