Thanks for a great tutorial! Question on the waist: did you only take in at one spot? Or did you take in at two places on the waist and divide the "take in" measurements in half?

Oh yeah, great observation! I took them in 2 cm's in both sides, so 4 in total :-) Thank you!

I bought a beautiful second-hand white jeans that had weirdly wide legs and I bought them with the thought of „This will look good if I alter them later.“ Today I did, and it was nice and easy with this help and they look *amazing*! I am so happy, it looks rather professional. Loving my new pair of jeans that fits perfectly.

This is super helpful! I've been repairing & altering a lot lately but jeans intimidate me so this helps! Also this is random but I repaired a big hole in a sweater today by carefully tying the sweater's stitches with clear thread! It worked so great I had to share! It will work best on thicker yarns with texture but it's worth trying on any sweater with a hole.

This tutorial is awesome Signe; something like this was needed for jeans! I think altering denim is traditionally such a scary idea because of the thickness of the fabric. Would never have dared remove the rivets but it will give a more professional finish. Silly question but you don’t attempt to replace them afterward though?! I will fetch the pliers from my husbands toolkit 😉 and try on some old pairs. The results of your alterations are so good and worth the bother.

If you need to take the waist in 2 cm you should only sew 1 cm from the edge otherwise you’ll be taking them in by 4 cm
@UrsaMinor90106 жыл бұрын
I think she did sew 1cm from the edge but I agree the way she said it was very confusing. Thanks for your comment. As a perfectionist, it always leaves me with a strange feeling. I try not to complain when I think it would sound mean but then it haunts me for aaages :D :D

It was fun to see something that i had to learn for 3 years (😅) in the faculty school (I learned making and designing clothes from patterns til ready to wear.)Haven't done much in last years sewing since my home is too small to fit a machine in there 😜 But great video and reminding that if it's possible then we should take time for this work instead of buying just new items that could fit better. Smart! I have taken in a few pair of jeans and never separated the band. I ran the same seam from the leg up to the band, if you know what I mean :) I lost more than one needle in the process because the fabric is very thick there :) And I had no idea how to remove rivets :)

Great video, I've been waiting for this one as I have several jeans that need adjusting. I'd also just suggest using a good heavy duty needle in the machine so it can cope with the tougher denim fabric x

Jessica Thomas you've got to get a compatible needle for your machine brand. You can get specific needles often called 'Jeans' needles. A good haberdashery can advise. Something like these: m.johnlewis.com/janome-denim-needles-pack-of-5/p301913

Good question! You can take in any type of bottom down the sideseam. Usually the seam is hidden on the waistband on that type of pants, so the new seam you make when you sew back on the waistband will be visible in that little area . But I don't think anyone would notice really (especially if the pants are black), so I'd totally give it a go :-)

I get intimidated by sewing machines and diy project that entail sewing,tailoring,sizing,etc. I wish I could do this!!!! I have gotten a few good jeans recently but the sizing is not to my liking! I have a petite body and it's difficult to find a good flattering fit for me (5 foot 1" /105pds). It's frustrating,especially when you can't spend $75+ on jeans!!!! I may try this,thanks for this tutorial!

It's funny that many people find it scary to use a sewing machine, but I can totally relate. Don't know if it's the excessively fast moving needle or what it is, haha! But I understand, that must be really frustrating! Seriously, I wasn't all that good in sewing class, and this is quite simple to do once you catch the technique. I hope you'll give it a go!
@jessicatheodora95507 жыл бұрын

Oh wow! Thanks for the tips! I have an Asos mom jean pair that needs fixing at the waist so I’m really going to give it a go now! One question though, wouldn’t cutting 2 cm from the edge of the waistband mean that you’re getting 4 cm on each side? Or maybe it’s too early in the morning for me to do math! For the first pair, do you need to put back the rivets after all the alterations?
@UseLess_dk7 жыл бұрын
No, the rivets are only decorative. It does leave a tiny little hole, but because I take in the side seam it almost disappears with the new seam. :-) Jeans used to have rivets back in the day because they where originally used as part of a working uniform, especially in coal mines. So the rivets made them more sturdy at the seams :-) But if you want, you could hammer in a new one :-*

Awesome! I wish I can sew too! My problem is either the jeans are too long for my height or it is the right size but it always rides down from the waist (maybe because I don't have a butt). The 2nd one is harder for me to resolve even with a belt. Help!
@UseLess_dk7 жыл бұрын
I would take in the jeans at the hips and maybe a little down below the crotch area, still only working with the side seam. Just make sure you meet the old side seam with the new seam, if that makes sense :-) In that way your jeans will be tighter around the butt-area. There are two ways to resolve the jeans being too long: measure how much you need to take off and take 2 cm's from that measure. Then you fold it up 2x1cm and make a stitch :-) OR you cut just cut it, wash them and leave the edge raw. That's a very cool look too :-) Hope It was helpful

Some people have body types where it’s extremely hard to find a pair of jeans that actually fit properly. This video was very helpful for me to alter my jeans to fit me better. And there’s plenty of clothes out there in thrift stores for people to buy… better to fix what you have rather than buy more?
