Coupling nuts can be found in the ELECTRICAL dept. near conduit, threaded rod and fittings as they are used to suspend electrical conduits.

Re-watching the video..... at 2 a.m.! Ha ha ha. I just made a bunch of these for my downriggers, turned out ok. Should have watched this again before doing it. Oops! One thing that I did do, dot know if you've tried it, but to make star knobs, I started out using a hole saw, pressed down with the drill press to make the line marking multiple knobs. Then I used a forstner bit, in the press, and cut out the indent at 4 spits all around. On the inside knobs, I only had to make 2-3 indents as I finished cutting out the knobs. Then I finished them out like yours. Hope that this makes sense. Great video

Thanks - replying to this at 2:40am! 😂 Yes, I *did* try that, but I didn't do a very good job of it. But it seems like a feasible solution, so I'm glad it worked for you. 🙂

Thanks for sending this link to me. It's more than I could ask for. Like the star type at this point and plan on using my drill press to shape them out. We have the same Workmate. Use mine alot as a portable bench/vise. I built a router table top to sit on top with large dowels to fit the holes on workmate. Thanks again and keep pumping out vids that I can plagiarize....Haha.

I ordered some coupling nuts today. Now I will have an oversupply of every kind of insert, bolt, and nut needed. By the way, I also designed some myself on paper with a compass, protractor, and ruler. I drew them big. Then, I scanned them, reduced them to a good size, printed them out, and stuck them to paper.. I then copied and printed those out. I will stick them to boards with spray adhesive, cut them roughly to size, and sand them on my bench /spindle sander, like you.

Sounds good. And I have an oversupply of certain bolts and coupling nuts myself. Saved money by buying them online instead of the big box store, but of course storage is always an issue in my cramped workshop.

I need a wooden knob for my leather working stitching pony. I bought some small plastic knobs but having a wooden one would probably be more comfortable. Good stuff. Anyone belt out of shape about knob jokes hasn't spent much time on the internet. I hope you have thick skin to shrug their comments off. Oh and I love the red fast forward notification in the corner. And the Preppin' Weapon sanding blocks are great. I love their larger surface area over most blocks. I have four of them in a holster box that separates them. I got that idea from a woodworking magazine that had a lady with a badass shop that did the same.
@TheNewbieWoodworker
@TheNewbieWoodworker 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And I do agree with you about people being offended by the humor. I mean, have these people seen TV lately? As far as feel is concerned, I actually like the knobs that Rockler sells - they're rubbery, and they're relatively inexpensive. I have a bunch of them. But after a while, the cost does add up. Great idea about the holster for the sanding blocks. Love it!

The Newbie Woodworker: Yes, I think yours are of a very high standard and your presentation is clear and to the point, delivered at a speed I can easily assimilate. I hate listening to presentations that are so gabbled I simply miss much of the message and in particular, its implications. Keep up the good work.

Hi, could you share the link with for the Male knobs which go with the insert nuts
@TheNewbieWoodworker
@TheNewbieWoodworker 6 жыл бұрын
Sure! You can use this link and pick out some of the ones available: www.rockler.com/search/go?p=Q&asug=&w=knobs. You don't necessarily need to buy them from Rockler - you can hit up Amazon after looking there, but this will give you some ideas. Let me know if you need more information. Thanks!

Honestly, for quite a while, that's all I used. Then I came across a situation where I needed to tighten it down real good, and then I almost couldn't get it off! So now I just make up a match of knobs, and leave them in a box until I need them. 🙂

I'm looking for an AC unit for my workshop so your fleeting reference to the Emerson unit had my interest. Would you consider reviewing it in the near future? I'm concerned about how dust affects performance over time and how easy it is to clean the fins.
@TheNewbieWoodworker
@TheNewbieWoodworker 6 жыл бұрын
Hmm. I'm not sure how I'd know what affect the dust has. At least, not for a few months. When it starts to get really hot, say, August and September, then I'll be able to tell better.

another great video. early in the video you mentioned the size selection for hardware. buying extra is always a good idea. last year I did a video on hardware strategy in the small shop. basically, you choose a one size standard for all shop projects (I chose 1/4x20 for my shop). now I design everything with that size hardware and I keep everything I can relating to 1/4x20. such as nuts, locking nuts, bolts, carriage bolts, etc. This makes it easier to store and buy a bigger variety of hardware in larger quantities. That video might give you some ideas for future video subjects. keep up the great videos :>)

Great video! A few questions about the coupling nut... 1. do you use any glue? 2. What size hole do you drill... I would like to use a 1/4 bolt and make the knob out of hardwood... would that be maple? Thanks!!!!
@TheNewbieWoodworker
@TheNewbieWoodworker 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I didn't use any glue. You can either hammer the nut in, or if you have a vise, use that to squeeze it in. I can't remember what size hole I drilled, but measure the nut from flat side to the opposite flat side, then measure it from one "corner" to the opposite corner, and split the difference. Try it out on some scrap wood first, the same material as you'll be using. Also, soft wood like pine can handle a smaller hole, whereas hard wood may need a bigger hole. Maple would probably work just fine, but like I said try it out first - maple can be brittle sometimes so if the hole is too small, you could crack it.
