How to catch Kokanee Salmon using home made Kokanee Salmon lures. I'll show you how to tie a snell knot and make three different kokanee salmon lures that all utilize a double snell knot.

Great video. I use smile blades rather than the "French" blades for any spinners since they produce great action at slower speeds than the metal blades. I also use tapered beads in the squids because I'm too lazy to stack a bunch of beads in there. On the snells, I tie the bottom one like you showed, but do it first and then tie the top hook from the hook end forward. It's faster that way, and much easier to get the distance between hooks where I want it.

Great video. I altered slightly what you do because I was having trouble getting that bottom hook close to the top hook after tightening it (the gap was too large even if I started the wraps on the bottom hook even with the two hooks touching). What I do is pretty simple - wait to fully tighten the first hook (top hook) until the very end. Once you tighten the bottom hook there will be the normal large gap. Then go to the top hook and finally tighten it, and it will slide down towards the bottom hook as it tightens, thus shortening the gap.

Nice video; I tie similar lures for walleye fishing with nightcrawlers (harnesses), but don't need that knot. With my method, you can tie on your lowest hook first, then work your way up through the remainder of the add ons. Push the line through the eye of the bottom hook, just longer than the shank, then hold with your left hand. Grasping the rest of the line with your right hand, wrap 8-10 times tightly around the shank from the bottom up towards the eye, then push and pull the entire line through the eye. For the next one up, just feed the remaining long piece up through the eye, position it in relation to the bottom hook, and wrap and tie just like that one. Anything else to add, just slide down the line to the top hook (beads, spinners, blades, etc.) and finish.

Great video on making the lures. Can you provide a cheat sheet that tells where I can go to get the spinners, the spin and glow, sizes, etc. for all these three lures. I got the bead part, the hooks and the squid. An "ingredient" list would be very helpful and where to buy the ingredients.

Great video and amazing instruction on how to do this. I've never targeted Kokanee and have no idea how to catch them but have always wanted to learn. Might have to pick up a few items and make my own because this looks easy peesy. I could make them but could I catch Kok's....?!?! Dont have a boat but I do have a sit in kayak but no downrigger. I know Scotty and other companies make small downriggers for kayak so I may have to look into that. Thanks for the video Ty, this looks fun. Just like tying flies. Still a bunch of ice on Strawberry but may have to go after Kok's once it's gone.

@the-mountainlife 7 жыл бұрын
It's always "possible" to catch them, even during the winter through the ice. However, it really starts to get good in June/July. If you can get to the lake often, then give it a shot at ice off, it will likely be slow. But if you are only planning one or two trips this year, I would focus your time in June. Hope that helps.

Enjoyed the video. Do you use these same lures when salmon are running in rivers? If so do you add weights to the leader for cast ability and depth control?
@the-mountainlife
@the-mountainlife 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry I didn’t get to this sooner! I usually only fish for salmon in lakes, so I’m probably the wrong guy to ask but I think any of these methods could be used in rivers back trolling out of a boat, or successfully casting with some added weight. Good luck!

Were you using a rubber snubber? Kokanee have a very soft tissued mouth, so if there is a lot of tension on the line, it just rips the hook out of their mouth. Using a rubber snubber usually will help your landing percentage. Glad you got out!

I usually tie my trailing hook first with the knot you are using then the lead hook next with a slightly different knot. Seems to work great for me with the exception of the hooks don't always want to lay the same direction like I wan't. But I will try snelling them your way next time so I can have the same knot on both hooks. Dose the number of wraps matter? because I usually do 10 or 12 wraps on the trail hook just because the Kokanee are so rough on that hook some days.
@the-mountainlife
@the-mountainlife 5 жыл бұрын
Who knows, your way might be better... You could probably wrap more than I have been, just as long as everything pulls through nicely. You're right, it's almost always the trailing hook that breaks off first, the extra wraps may be a good idea. Let me know how it goes.
@roytiller4537
@roytiller4537 5 жыл бұрын
@@the-mountainlife I tried it your way and so far it turned out pretty good. I will have to see if I can repeat tying the knots in that fashion only with 8 to 10 wraps again and again because I would rather have the same knot on both hooks . It's a little tricky to do it with the trail hook right up next to the leading hook until pulled taught but not impossible. To me trying to tie the egg loop knot is almost impossible but not this, so far. Thanks for the video, I learned something new today.
@the-mountainlife
@the-mountainlife 5 жыл бұрын
@@roytiller4537 Glad it seems to be working out. The worst part, like you said, is trying to tie the trailing hook with it butted up against the lead hook. Glad you learned something new, now to just get some fish in the boat!

Could you use one bobber stop instead of the 4 beads on the hoochie rig?
@the-mountainlife
@the-mountainlife 3 жыл бұрын
I guess, but I wonder about the diameter of the bobber stop not being big enough and the squid just sliding over it...I've just always used beads because it's cheap and easy and I don't have to make sure and tighten a bobber stop knot periodically.
@davidk2137
@davidk2137 3 жыл бұрын
@@the-mountainlife The new type of bobber stoppers are not of string. They come in sizes to fit your line diameter and should work perfectly - saving $ on beads. search. "Rubber Fishing Bobber Stopper", for example.
