For those wondering about the yarn: it is a LACE/SOCK weight. That's why the strands are smaller to begin with (most yarn weight in craft stores in the USA is category 4 - lace/sock weight is category 0/1).

That is really good info❤️ If I want longer strands can you tell me what I should be looking for. I know very little about yarn but brushes out some and the individual strands gave me a max length of just over 2 inches. I think it had a number one on it like you mentioned. Just not sure what to ask for next time I'm in the US and got it from Michael's but Walmart also has some, just not sure what would be longer strands when brushed out Side note the one I used was kinda a thicker yarn with 3 strand like things twisted..not sure if that matters. They do have some thinner yarns with 3 of the strand thingies. But is much thinner almost like something you would use for making bracelets. I don't know if the girth or fluffiness makes a difference or not🤷‍♂️ Hope that made any sense😄🤦‍♂️

This is great! Also, I was making wefts with a particular acrylic yarn and it just wasn't cooperating. For some reason, the fiber just didn't want to get smooth. After a LOT of experimentation, I wound up turning the heat on my straightener way down and pulling on the fiber pretty hard, which resulted in a stretched fiber- I gained between half an inch and three quarters of an inch, which honestly surprised me a lot! Experiment! You never know what you might find out! Edit: also, you could just work directly from the skein, which would avoid a lot of those short bits you're left with! Edit #2- never mind. Working directly from the skein didn't work so well. 😕

What size yarn was this when you first got it? Was it a regular worsted weight yarn you used? I tried this with a size four that I unraveled using a drill but they didn’t look good like yours. I’m wondering if maybe I need to use more heat when I straighten it the first time!
@doriantheelf8242

Yarn I use is a crochet yarn. Can't say about size, but as you can see threads are thin. Max heat for acrylic is 110°C, so it may be not a good idea to use more heat. Overheated acrylic becomes not so soft as normal heated. It's mostly a question about quality of acrylic fiber. It varies a lot from yarn to yarn and from brand to brand. Here on video I use yarn called Etamin. It's a silky 100% acrylic crochet yarn. And different brands have it. You also may try to look for 100% microfiber yarn, usually it's same pure acrylic. But have to say that almost all yarn I can find here where I am is Turkish and a bit of Italian yarn.

For a small size dolls (1/6) it will be this long. For 1/4 size dolls - no. In average acrylic fiber is around 14-16 cm. Rarely some very little amount was 20 cm. This is what I can say from my experience.

Hi I have a few questions! I reeeeeaallly want to use this method to make a Rapunzel wig and it has to be really long, like I’m talking 2 meters at least. My question is is that possible or will the hair just like fall apart or something? If so what if I maybe braided it, would that maybe work? Also does the hair like shrink a lot when you pull the fibre like you did in the video? I’m veeery new to this method I just discovered it like an hour ago so I don’t know exactly how it works but I’m totally obsessed with it🤩😍🤩😍

Hi))) Unfortunately acrylic fibre max length is 20 cm and it's just few rare fibers in a strand. I never met it longer. In average acrylic is about 14-16 cm. If you need long hair it's only synthetic fibre or alpaca. It's possible to find alpaca 40 cm, but the price will be high. In a case of alpaca I recommend Zerga Studio. You can find them on Instagram and Etsy. My friend brought from them for her Popovy doll wig and said that never net better quality.

Hmmm, hard to say. I'm not sure it will work this way. Acrylic is afraid of temperature higher than 100 ° C, if I remember right. You may try to untwist, pull hair from untwisted unstraightened strands and brush it. And then rinse it in cool or cold water and try to straighten it. P.S. Could you DM me on Instagram? It's easier to reply there. I will try to do the same at this weekend to see if it works.

Unfortunately I can't help you with this. US based people asked me and it seems like Turkish brands of yarn is impossible to find in US. All Etamins I know for now are by Turkish brands. The only thing I can say is the more shiny and less fluffy a thread is, the best result you'll get. Also you may try to look for a 100% microfiber yarn. Mostly it's kinda acrylic. But I didn't tried any such yarn, so it's just assume. I got similar hair quality with "Ibiza" by Nako. Not sure if I showed it in my Instagram. But Nako is also Turkish brand.

Thank you for the tutorial! It works great if you have the right yarn and I'm lucky we get YarnArt in Romania. Tried pulling fibers with other types of acrylic but my fingers hurt and very little came out. My only problem is after separating the 2 strands my yarn is very twisty and it's very difficult to handle to straighten. How does your yarn sit so nice before you iron it?
@doriantheelf8242
@doriantheelf8242 Жыл бұрын
Super, I'm so happy it works! Thank you for share your experience. I may also recommend you to try Nako "Ibiza". It's also Turkish yarn. I had one orange-red colour of it at home in Mariupol. It works also good and fiber quality in my opinion is very similar. If you have Instagram, you may check the wig I made for Monster High. It's mix of black, red and orange-red Nako. Hmm, never met Etamin twists honestly. If you have Instagram we may have videochat in DM, maybe if I saw it I may find something to advice you. Because just reading it's really difficult to imagine since I never met such problem.

@@doriantheelf8242 Thank you for the quick reply and sorry for my late, it was a busy week. I can't find Nako in stores but I have enough Yarnart Etamin to play with for now. Thank you for the recommendation, will keep it in mind for the future. Sadly I don't use Instagram, but I think I fixed my twisting problem, it's just more work than I expected. My problem now is hair fibers come out of glued wefts, I think maybe i didn't line-up the hair ends enough. Will have to practice more. If you could do a video someday with more detail on how much you iron the hair ( mine is not so shinny and makes knots fast) and how to prepare it for glueing in wefts, that would be very helpful. I'm sorry for what is happening in your country now. Sending you hugs from your neighbors. Slava Ukraini!

I just rinse it in water. Yarn always cowered with something for comfortable knitting. And when you rinse your ready knitted cloth it always becomes softer, so... Also I tried hair conditioner, but didn't see big difference from just water rinse. If you have conditioner for clothing you may try it too (I don't have/use it).

How long does it end up being on the dolls head? I use the standard method, and it usually doesn’t get longer than shoulder length.. but it looks like your yarn is “stiffer” than mine. I use it for crochet but works for knitting as well. Maybe too soft/shorter fibers? Thank you for this idea!!
@doriantheelf8242

Longer than shoulder length anyway. Even for SD13. To the middle of back for my SDs (instagram.com/p/B7D64v3nhyI/?igshid=1xkx7e69v8imv). Curled wig is to shoulders for SD. And longer than waist, sometimes to buttoks for Minifee and my Withdoll MSD girl. It's really longer with this method and not that much wastes. But fiber length also depends on brand. This yarn on the video is also crochet yarn and it doesn't stiff. The fiber in this yarn is the most soft and silky of all I tried. P.S. I will gladly help and will answer if you have more questions, just DM me on Instagram @hikihiki_ksu. It will be more quick and comfortable. And I could show photos and videos in DM there. Link I gave is from my IG - dark blue yarn wig on SD13 doll. Unfortunately it's impossible to add a screenshot here((((

It works of course. Just keep in mind that acrylic fibre in different yarn could be different quality and not always you could realise it without trying. So some process of transforming yarn into hair could be not as smooth as you may expect after the video. I met lower quality in same Etamin I use in the video. Where fiber itself was already tangled when I came to stage where I pull out the fibre. So I had to tear apart fibre instead of easily pull it.

Of course it's not, acrylic is much thinner than hair and do tangles easily. If you have it max long and want it to looks good longer you have take good care of it. Actually any material need to have a good care. If you want something "like hair" for your dolls, then you have to buy goat or alpaca hair. But of course it much more expensive.
