In this video I will show you how to quickly and cheaply make simple sewer pipes with grates. You can use these horizontally or vertically depending on your dungeon or war game table design. You can also easily modify these to be any length to fit your needs.
Have fun and experiment.
Imagine. Build. Play.

Great grates! Wire instead of toothpicks would work well for this since it doesn't have a grain. Thank you so much for this tut!

One method I've used for rusty metal pipes is to add some patches of sand that was painted over. This not only gives it some great texture, but also adds that flakey or bubbly texture that rust can have on metal as it eats away at it. It really does help to sell the rust weathering effect.

Joshua Chunick Awesome idea. I've actually been wanting to try painting on actual powdered and flaked rust.

Great idea for sewer pipes. I haven't delved into cardboard much and I always thought there was a crafting aspect to toilet paper rolls. Keep up the good work.

thanks! I am actually working on a fairy garden pretty soon, and what I plan to do is, as crazy as it sounds, when the painting is all said and done, use some form of liquid concrete to make it harder/more like a hard as a rock solid, and waterproofing sealer, so it can be a functional grate to drain water, I have these oversized rolls from work I plan to do it with, been looking forever for a how to guide on sewer grates for when i start making the garden as it will be done ontop of plaster.. I know this guide isn't for fairy gardens however, I plan to make some sort of village with orcs attacking elves, not really a fairy garden however an attack theme on a town garden as a Christmas gift (will take a few months) haha..

Great way to make some quick inexpensive greebles. I'm going to make some of these for my industrial terrain and 3D Space Hulk tiles. Maybe add some rivets around the edge and sponge some rust effects on for another layer of detail.

I notice a bit of warping on the cardboard after paints and washes. it's not a huge issue for rusted grates, but if your making newer/cleaner grates maybe a coat of modge podge to seal it before paint might prevent the warping? Great video, watching more now!

How would you make the bars on the pipes look like they have been bent open? Your work is fabulous. I am working on broadening my diorama skills. I have done some koi ponds, wishing well, & a waterfall. I am now working on a swamp scene with a lizard man & mech suit fighting. Wanting to make the suit look like the cockpit is lit up. Trying different ideas.
@MiniTerrainDomain
@MiniTerrainDomain 6 жыл бұрын
To make the bars look bent, I might use plastic toothpicks and heat them with a heat gun or hair dryer to bend them.

Very impressed. I had to do a refresh on it. I am looking at making a sewage toxic waste scene. How would you make it to where the front opens like a hatch & how would you make it to where instead of bars it had a grid front?
@MiniTerrainDomain
@MiniTerrainDomain 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! For a hatch opening I might make it have a wheel lock (maybe use a salvaged steering wheel from a toy car). For grid, I would use either the plastic "granny grid"--the kind used for making yarn designs--or mesh screen material for a screen door.
