Just finally got a molder head, and it literally "paid for itself" the first time I used it, and it wasn't even that big of a project! Being able to make custom molding, using off cuts of the same wood used for the rest of the project, is great. Way WAY less expensive than buying stain grade hard wood molding, and no worries about irregularities in how it takes a finish. You can also do things with a molding head that you just can't do with a router or shaper. Now I need to figure out how many more molding heads I need, so I don't have to swap blades so much.

During the ongoing remodel of my house I have saved enough on molding to pay for a table saw and router. With even simple quarter round going for around a buck a foot, one of those three blade molding cutters are a must have for anyone who knows how to use one. I got mine at a yard sale ten years ago and the blades are still good.

I really liked the quick shot of you unplugging the tablesaw before changing the blade, Jon - subtle, but an important message. My finger is still healing after tearing it to shreds on my tablesaw, so I'm particularly conscious of that stuff now! The commercial looks great - really beautifully filmed, and a lovely advert for your channel too - I'd have worried if it wasn't well produced. Great stuff, Toby

Sears used to have molding cutters that came in either one or three cutter versions - I bought a one-cutter model nearly 40 years ago. Don't need it often, but at the time it seemed like something that would be useful. Hanford Mills Museum in East Meredith, NY has a 19th century molding machine that they used to make specialty moldings for architectural restoration work. The neat thing is that the machine is driven by belts from a line shaft powered by a waterwheel.

I think it's a bit funny that at the big woodworking company where I used to work we also had these EXACT same 2 cutter heads for occasional use on the table saw. For most jobs, however, we had a specially built moulding machine (we milled our own baseboards and crown mouldings, as well as curved mouldings for archways and windows).

I have both of those moulding heads. The round one or the second one you showed is a Richards made in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. The craftsman blades can be used in the Richard but the Richards blades does not have the grove that fits the Craftsman. I used them on the Radial Arm saw in the horz. position with a guard that was made for these moulding heads. They worked well but were scary. The table mounted router is much less scary.
@bobbg90418 жыл бұрын
I'd like to see what you have set up, I'd like to use mine on a RAS, but until I know how its done I won't turn on the saw with it on the arbor. Make a KZbin video of it. What direction would you move the wood into the spinning blades or away from? I was thinking kind of like on a table saw with the fence between the cutter and me wood into the cut the wrong way on a RAS from right to left. Blade face to the table.
@vernmitchinson20138 жыл бұрын
It's been a long time since I used it but I remember that the moulding head was in the horizontal position with the moulding head under neath. The cutters are just cut thru the fence far enough to cut the moulding into the wood as the wood is fed from the right side. The moulding is cut on the edge of the board. There is a special guard made to be used with the moulding cutter. It has a more or less flat plate the attaches to the motor housing and a semi-circular shield that is about two inches high and is adjustable via two rods that are connected to the flat plate. There is no way I would ever use this attachement without the guard in place. Do a search to see this guard in use; "Raising a panel on a DeWalt radial arm saw"

How would you compare the Craftsman molding head to a molding machine or a shaper? I own a Belsaw planer/molder but haven't purchased any molding knives yet. Changing the knives for a small project would take quite a bit of time. I'd like to get a shaper sometime. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the machines used are cheaper than a few sets of new blades. I can pick up one of those Craftsman molding heads used for pretty cheep (much cheaper than new molding blades).
@every-dayjoe76548 жыл бұрын
hi, i have a belsaw moulder /planer, and the main difference is that the belsaw is much safer. The belsaw has an autofeed, which saves you from having to place you hands near the blade, like you do on the table saw. however if you have an autofeed for you table saw then there isn't much of a difference besides the fact that one of those set screw could let go and the blade could fly out, and who knows from there. Honestly, I about peed in my pant the 1st time I fired up the moulder head on my table saw. The sound is fierce, and knowing that one screw is holding the blade down still makes me nervous. That being said, I use a the belsaw in my shop if I have the correct moulding blade, and router when I'm out, or for convenience. My thing is staying efficient, and swapping blades is a little inconvenient so I don't use the table saw moulding set very often. PS..if you do buy one then make sure you have a way to sharpen them on your own..
@nicholassmerk8 жыл бұрын
Every-Day Joe Sharpening: The Belsaw blades or the Craftsman blades? I have a saw sharpening shop in-town, but I haven't purchased any real sharpening tools beside water/oil stones. Seriously, the Belsaw blades cost as much as I paid for the entire machine...I'm almost considering purchasing a larger planer so I don't have to take knives out of the machine to use it as a molder. On a side note, the funny thing about Belsaws is when you look at well used ones, how many you see that have thrown a knife sometime in the past. I'd venture to say that they were probably installed wrong, but I've seen plenty with battle scars.

Jim I have a question on why you wouldn't use a router with a beading bit as it would route the complete the whole bead in one pass and be 10,000% faster and safer. Just my 2¢

The things have been around as long as I can remember. Once you get the arbor unit you can get hundreds of different blade shapes. And there are companies who will grind one special for you. Mine is a Craftsman made around 1946 that I got at a yard sale. The original blades are still good. With even simple molding running north of a buck a foot you can save the cost of a really good table saw remodeling one house.

Hey Jon, I needed some bead molding for a project. Of course it wasn't available at the big home stores so I hastily logged on eBay and bought a cutterhead. The Sears 9-3214. I realized after watching this video that it requires a spacer and mines not coming with one. Can you tell me how big of a spacer I need and anything else that may be needed?
