i had this same problem. if your under ground you need to make sure there is enough space for the zombies to spawn so dig out around the spawner. look at this video to see how much space i had around my spawner. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYTMpKZmns14f7c

It's kinda funny, let me tell you a story.... On I joined an SMP someone said tp to me for free stuff so I accepted hoping it was not a sham. I teleported and suddenly got killed by about 5 people in iron armour. Frustrated I decided to hint them down. I asked if I could tp AGAIN and they said yes. They killed me but before they could I took a screenie of their coords. Angry I hunted them down with a stone sword and no armour. I found an egirl who was alone by the trap and I made my move, the trap was by a lake and I tried to murder her. She thought I was one of them and tried crouching to make peace but I kept swinging and murdered her. I gathered her items, extremely proud of myself for killing a full iron, and set out on my journey to rid all who trap again.
