Question :I'm over a year into cattle.... and have a cow-calf herd w/ bull on site. Having fun & enjoy it...and i know what you mean...i love cattle more than most people i meet. I don't have to turn a profit i'm retired early. However i keep running the numbers...facts and figures...and it seems like the best way to be profitable immediately in a small cattle farm....is to buy at auction 500 to 600lb steer end of Feb, early March...let them out in field with lots of grass, lots of good fresh water and mineral block- loose minerals....and then in October, November, cake them and take them all back to the sale auction barn. In this manner you have no winter work to do (labor goes way down) and your normal corn-hay costs from November 20th until Feb 20th...for 3 months no costs (i'm in Texas, longer growing season)...you let the land relax over winter...less mudd near barn. You could skip the cake in october-november...and have like no costs. What's your thoughts on this Rich? What am i missing in my logic? It seem like a win-win just to raise steer seasonally versus cow-calf breeding operation. I really believe money and easier profits are had just beefing up steer. However I would miss the breeding and calving..creating new life. I have two separate farms...and am fencing 31 acres that i might use to test seasonal steer on. I believe it'll turn a profit where i'm losing on the cow-calf. I need more land...but i'm near a large city...too expensive to buy and too much competition to rent/lease.

Thanks for the information. My siblings and I inherited a 160 or so acre property in NW Alabama that has been in our family since the 1940s. It has about 70 acres in pasture, and my grandfather had beef cattle on it at one time. It would be nice to see cattle on it again some day. I look forward to watching more of your episodes.

Great video, I have been into cattle for 6 years ,started feeding 500 lbs steers to finish so we could have beef and am now selling beef to friends and family because it's not worth it to only raise 1. This past Christmas I purchased 4 beef bottle calves, 3 are angus heifers, I bull calf, thinking of raising the heifers to start my herd, but it will take awhile

That is awesome! Very good way to build a very profitable cow calf operation. After reading your comment, I left you a offical (Good Job) on this new video I put up today. Building your herd with calfs, you are saving on your producers, you get to see how well they do growing, and so forth. It gives you a solid background on your stock. You know who to keep in your program, and who to cut out. There is a lot of producers that are looking to start direct to consumers sales, due to all the crazyness in the markets of late. I know a couple of guys local that have been doing very well with direct sales of meat. I think your on the right track. ~ Rich

Thank you for the video, I am 50 years old disabled veteran, I’m excited to learn and get into the cattle business. I will be purchasing a little over 26ac, with no fencing what would be a sensible acreage to fence? How many cattle should I start with to get me started? I am looking to raise black angus cows.
@TennesseeHomestead
@TennesseeHomestead Жыл бұрын
KZbin somehow lost all the comments on this video??? They just showed up today. I would fence the perimeter with five strand wire with splitting the acreage in half with a gate. Then you can use polywire to manage the pastures. I have a lot of pasture management videos that can help you with that. A cow/calf pair, a bred cow, and a young bull calf. That is a great place to start to gain the experience to expand your herd. The number of head you can run on your place will depend on location. Your county extension office can tell you the approx. number of cattle per acre for your area. Sorry so late with this. ~ Rich

I took over the family farm back in 2014. Started with 3 cows and a bull. Now in 2020 Im almost at 20. I've been thinking heavily about moving into Seed stock cattle. Everyone around me has Black cattle or Brahman. I'd like to do something red (Santa Getrudis, Red Angus, Red Brangus, or Beef Master)
@TennesseeHomestead
@TennesseeHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry I'm so late with my replies, KZbin has just put these comments in my channel system. I don't have any hands on with Santa Getrudis, but Red Angus or Brangus are great the Angus is a good mid frame with the Brangus being a large frame. Not to say that BeefMaster is not a bad choice either. ~ Rich

I grew up in the dairy business. We had to sell the family farm, not by choice 28 yrs ago. I miss working with cattle. My cattle., not someone else's. I want a cow/calf operation. How do I get there. I have no land. The only asset I have is my childhood home. I wood sell it and relocate in a heartbeat. I don't know about financing. Do I sell this house and use that money? Do I lease a place? I live in Texas and places to lease are hard to find. My credit is bad so I don't know where to start.

Was looking into starting a stocker operation beginning with buying 400 lbs calves and selling them aroung 550 lbs. Buying and selling about every 3 or 4 months. Was wondering what your input would be. Thanks for all the information you give. DONNY

Donny, I would look hard at the matket before jumping in. There is currently a large backlog on processinng. Move to quickly and you could end up stuck in the current log jam. They are starting to move some stock through, but it could take a while you undo this mess. Keep a watch on the futures reports, and that should give you a heads up on when things are going to get back to normal. ~ Rich

Would it be better to start out with quality registered cattle than random commercial cattle? Seems like the odds of getting better genetics is better with selective registered cattle.

Cattle are herd animals. If you have other cattle in the area, you would be better off with at least two. A lone cow might hear other cows and will tear down a fence to find that other herd. ~ Rich

Oh yes when those girls are in cycle, they get a little crazy. Yep, you have to keep your head on a swivel when working around cattle. Molly my old herd dog was my second set of eyes, that dog would hold off any cow she thought was too excited untill she saw that they calmed down. So very true, they can love you to death. Sorry for being so late replying, life has been crazy. I love the Beefmaster, they are heavy feeders though. If you have good grass you will love them. If they start running up too much cost in feed, cross breed with like Angus to cut down on their body bulk. Let me know how the work for you down there. Sorry on my slow reply. Between travel, work, remodeling project and fighting with KZbin has keep me on the run. lol ~ Rich

What is a good operation if you only have 7 acres?
@TennesseeHomestead
@TennesseeHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Ken, that really depends on your location. Some areas of the country you may need 20+ acres per head others you may get by with 1 acre per head. Check with your county extension agent he can tell you what the county average is. You can often improve on that number with good pasture management. You might consider smaller breeds like Dexters. With small acres you can do steers or a cow/calf setup, but you have to keep in mind that on 7 acres it's going to be a side cash type of operation. ~ Rich

do you have the fear of the fact that your bulls can be poisoned from other people if they are on vecan land where there is no one around to see them what they are doing ? What would you do in such kind of situation ?

I disagree on temperament on the breeds. Brahmans can be just as gentle as other breeds he suggest are gentle, his gentle breeds can be just as mean and aggressive as Brahmans. Animals are what you put into them.
