Mushrooms that require dung to grow are typically those that thrive in nutrient-rich, decomposing organic matter. In this video we show you a easy way how to make a cow manure mix which is based on a recipe that originally used treated horse manure which is hard to find.
Here's a list of some common dung-loving mushroom species, focusing on their common names:
Button Mushroom (Agaricus bisporus): While not directly grown on dung, button mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a compost that can include horse manure along with straw and other organic materials. The composted manure provides a nutrient-rich environment.
Portobello Mushroom (Agaricus bisporus): Essentially a mature version of the button mushroom, portobellos are also grown on nutrient-rich compost that may include manure.
Cremini Mushroom (Agaricus bisporus): Creminis are the same species as button and portobello mushrooms, just at a different growth stage. Like its relatives, it can be grown on a compost containing manure.
Psilocybe cubensis - A well-known mushroom species that often grows in cow and buffalo dung.
Panaeolus cyanescens (Blue Meanies, Pan Cyans) - A species that prefers dung, especially in warm, humid climates.
Coprophilous mushrooms - This is a broad category rather than a specific species, encompassing all mushrooms that grow on dung. It includes various species, not all of which are well-known or widely cultivated.

It's worth noting that while these mushrooms are commonly associated with dung, many can also grow on other substrates that replicate the nutrient profile of dung, especially in a cultivation setting. These substrates can include composted manures, straw, or other organic composts that have been properly prepared to avoid contamination and to promote healthy mushroom growth.
