Practice? I like to use more glue than I need and let it squeeze out of the joint. Its important to let it cool before trying to remove it though because if you try to wipe it away to quickly it will stick to the outside of the cardboard and leave a shiny patch that you will never be able to cleanly remove.

I don't use any plans that I could link. The only 'templates' I use are the full scale pictures that I trace from images on the internet. If you would like to know how I do that, I have a video on my tips and tricks playlist. There are much better ways to do it if you have the software and the inclination to put in way more effort, but I don't.
