How to make Nigeria's Akamu, Pap, or Ogi - a special dish for pregnant women and children to keep them healthy.

Today on BattaBox's Food Arena with presenter Warri Pikin we're not looking at food, but a drink - the famous Pap, Ogi (in Yoruba), or Akamu (in Igbo)
Firstly, you wash, mix and then grind the corn to remove the chaff in buckets and water. This will ensure the pap comes out clean, and the chaff is often given to goats as food. Once the pap, ogi, or akamu is processed, you mix a little water and then serve with Nigerian classic food dishes such as plantain, puff puff or fried yam. The only ingredients you will need are Wet Corn Starch, Water, evaporated milk , and some sugar if you have a sweet tooth.
This is Nigerian food that many children in Nigeria will be fed by mothers, even if they don't enjoy the taste, to help them stay healthy. Akamu is said to help pregnant women with putting milk in their breasts and also assist the unborn babies health.
Did your mother feed you (and beat you until you drank it!) this special Nigerian food? It's sour, so maybe add a little sugar to sweeten the taste!

Pap, which we call 'Kooko', 'Akatsa', 'Zogbor', in Ghana is a staple. It's the original West African baby's first food and fever destroyer. I like it very sour with roasted groundnuts. Yummy! West African food is the best.

Is this porridge? This is a traditional breakfast in the Caribs. We give it to our children alot. By force we drink it like formula😂. We make it with corn, plantain, green banana, etc. You can make any kind of porridge. Just add milk, coconut milk, sweet milk, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg. At least this is the basics. I've never seen it from scratch like this. Nice.

My sister, this is made from corn as well. Mhen, i respect every African who survived the transatlantic slave trade. Despite the horrors they went through, they made sure they maintained and preserved their cultures even when their languages were taken away from them.

Mosunmola Adeojo maintained what culture... corn is indigenous to America... VERY well documented fact. This is based off American traditions. When corn made its way around the world, everyone was getting sick and dying because they weren’t preparing corn properly... SMH.

Mosunmola Adeojo Very true. We make this in the Carib. What people don't know is that Africans we're there before the transatlantic trade. I'm Jamaican and something I've discovered were direct African like a place in Westmoreland called Abeokuta, Jamaica. I never knew that was a Yoruba name😂. Matter a fact this tribe took over many parts of the Americas before the trade like the name "Taiwo" is on old maps. Much love and blessings to you 😆

Corn is fermented and it is ground, then sieved to separate the chaff, the corn used is usually dry corn not flour. The fermentation process makes it easily digestible and it adds to the nutritional value. Some people add spices to it, you can use Millet, as well.
