Andouille is pronounced ahhhn-doo-ey. I’m from South Louisiana. Trust me. Looks amazing!

Looks good! I learned from either Alton Brown or Chef John that if you’re making a broth with onion that will be fished out, leave the yellow peels on to add gorgeous color.

Never been a fan of okra because of it's sliminess, but I do know about it's ability to thicken soups and stews. I may have to try this! Thanks for constantly trying new recipes!

You can always fry the okra first- like she fried the sausages -to take away it’s sliminess- if you don’t like the slime. Personally I look forward to the slime. 😊

For whatever reason, I've never been a fan of any cajun food/flavor. I'm a very southern 'Hoosier'. Hammocks, beans, greens, & cornbread are huge favorites here. (Just one mile north of Louisville, KY) You had me at hammock! 👍 🧅 🧄 🐷 🥘 🍤

Wow I never heard of this, but I'm going to definitely try it. Growing up my mom fixed okra,corn, and tomatoes together in one large soup pot, oh yeah I remember she added butter beans. Some say Lima, we always said butter beans. She made a pan of corn bread. This is giving me childhood vibes. Thanks for this recipe. Love, respect and positivity always. Vee J.🙂👍😋✌️💕🕯️👋.

Now that’s an economic meal! If needed, sub fish chunks for shrimp. Or just use more smoked ham or any cheap sausage for andouille.

It's like gumbo and red-beans-and-rice had a baby, and I'm not mad about it. Despite growing up and living in south Louisiana, I've never heard of this dish. I am mad about that.

It's from the Gullah people in the Carolinas who are the descendants of West African enslaved people first brought to the Carolinas. They are known for retaining much of their culture and traditions despite forced assimilation by their white slavers. Ironically, this dish is presented without its rich history.

If you get tough okra, cut it into thinner slices, or score it lengthwise before you cut it up.

My mom used to make a gumbo very similar to the Okra and shrimp stew I think African-Americans were the first to put this on the map especially using the ham hocks I don't know any other race who was using the hammocks before African-Americans started using that way back in slavery so yes the stewl look very good but it's very similar to what we as African-American people have made before.

Make it with turkey!! You can substitute smoked turkey wings or necks or legs (they're all fully cooked at your grocery store and should be right by the smoked ham hocks). There's turkey andouille sausage available too.

Since many seem to detest okra, because of its slime- one trick I learnt was first to shallow fry them like the cook did the sausages and that would help with removing the slime. This adds an extra step but if you don’t enjoy the slime as I do, this is your best bet.

this looks so yummy -- except for the okra, which i destest. what can i substitute for flavor & thickening?😋😊
@Jean-tt6on
@Jean-tt6on 11 ай бұрын
I think maybe green beans or zucchini and for the thickening I'd do a couple spoons of roux (I cheat and use premade roux sold in the grocery stores). Just don't get too heavy handed with the roux or it will have more of a gumbo texture/color.

The ingredient pork should be included in the title, seems to be more essential for this stew that the okra or the shrimp.

Butter beans are a pale brownish color. Good looking stew, though. My mother used to make it vegetarian, mixed vegetables. I cook it with chicken thighs and strip the meat off the bones before discarding them. Hot sauce or peppers, a big yes. Cornbread on the side a huge must! P. S. When I say vegetarian, that does not mean without smoked ham hocks or smoked turkey wings.

Okra is nasty, gross, and revolting. It should be a crime to put shrimp in anything with okra. The only thing worse then putting it in any kind of meal or food is picking it off the plant. I think God did not intend for man to eat the stuff but just have a nice flowering plant. I am going to stick with what I think God intended and never ever get even near the stuff.
