I'd like to thank you for this video. I am a farmer and on Saturday at 3pm my tractor wouldn't start. The starter smoked a bit on its last try and I assumed it was dead. I watched your video then took my starter apart. I had nothing to lose since the tractor store was closed 'till Monday. It was extremely dirty with oily, greasy dirt. I cleaned it well and reassembled it. After that, I bench tested it (another YT video) and it worked! Today it has been working much better than before and I've transplanted cauliflower, zucchini and summer squash. I'd be down for days sourcing a new starter without this video. It feels good to solve a problem and keep trucking. Thanks man!

Nice video. I needed a refresher after 40 years of bolting on replacements for customers. Thank you. The commutator just dropping into the brushes doesn't look familiar at all though. I remember that being the nightmare of electric motor rebuilds "back in the day"... holding the spring loaded brushes back until the commutator was in place, while still being able to release them once it was seated.

solid. i just did my 911 and not only saved a few hundred but also got the car back on the road in a day. some tricks that may be helpful for other cars: 1. mark the orientation of EVERYTHING with a paint pen as you disassemble 2. i used red scotchbrite for the brushes and armature 3. clean everything with electrical contact cleaner 4. use small zipties to hold the brushes in the holders as you reassemble 5. then place the largest socket that will fit inside the brushes to hold them compressed and cut the zipties 6. reassemble rock and roll.

Nice cleaning up. A tricky part is pushing and holding back the four brushes while inserting the commutator. Several ways: Tie wraps, a socket under them, etc. You should also try to disassemble the gear reduction box, clean and grease. You should replace the brushes too if you can find them.

Thanks! Good tips 😉Brushes was in good condition and to replace them need to solder connection and to buy new ones need special order so I decided to leave original and over all this starter is pretty complicated. For more simple starters I agree with you 100%, do everything while you there ✌
@damianbutterworth24343 жыл бұрын
I used to work in a starter repair factory. We would do about 150 a day. If you want to strip a sealed solenoid then here`s how. First of all get the solder hot and flick the solenoid so the solder flys out the hole. Once the wires are all clear then get some nice thick angle iron. Drill three holes matching the solenoid attaching holes. Then drill one in the middle of the holes big enough to fit a 3/8th extension bar. Put a socket in the solenoid hole that fits nice. Screw the screws through the angle iron and into the solenoid holes. Be careful not to go to far as the copper windings inside will be damaged. So you might need washers. Just wind in with you hand to save damage. Once the solenoid is fitted to the angle iron then insert the 3/8 extension bar through the middle hole. Get a big vice and put 2 big spacers each side of the solenoid and put in the vice so the extension bar is on one jaw and the 2 big spacers with the solenoid are on the other jaw. Then close the vice and the extension bar should push the solenoid apart. When it apart you have to open the metal case with a hammer to get it back together to get rid of the lip.

I came to youtube to find a video on rebuilding a starter for my LeSabre hoping to teach my daughter's like. My daddy taught me back in the 80's when I was like 12 or 13. Sadly he passed when i was 17. I hated having to sit there and watch and listen to him teach me(teenagers right) now I'm blessed he had shown me so much stuff to do with cars & motorcycles. Thanks for making this video. It brought back sad but heart warming memories. Now I can pass this knowledge on to my daughters. P.s. wish you would of posted what you was used to clean the parts. Like was it a hard bristle brush? Was the blue thing sand paper? If so what grade? And thank you💞💞💞

This video is very helpful for people with starter issue however the issue with this car wasn't the starter and I did not notice a big difference after you cleaned the starter as far as starting the car. The reason that your car doesn't start right away could be many things.The first thing to check is the battery and the connections. Make sure the battery is healthy and the terminals and the clamps are not corroded and also check the connection from the battery negative terminal to the body is good. Then start with air filter and spark plugs.Make sure the throttle body and mass sensor are clean and if the problem is still there I will check the fuel pressure.

@@henrilica483 My brother has the same problem on his 1.9 TDI. Snags the key from your hand when cold but a bitch to start when warm/hot. They usually get that with age: starter not at 100% cranking power, battery the same, leads that get a bit corroded and whatnot. The fix: the high route is to get the ECU flashed; the low (and much cheaper) route is to install a TDI Hot Start Magic Button where you're bypassing the coolant temp sensor only for when you hot start the car, tricking the ECU into thinking the engine is stone cold and squirt more fuel and faster. That's what my brother has on his Golf and it works. Everytime. This dude explains it overall but I'm sure you can find more about it online: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJnJnJ2AgtmJibc&app=desktop Now for the Overboost it's more likely the VG part in the VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) that TDIs have. Either the vacuum thing that moves the vanes inside the turbo that control flow and turbo RPM is...well...broken...OR the vanes are sticking open/closed. I've seen some videos of people squirting oven cleaner inside the hot side of the turbo to break up the carbon and free the vanes. Search for that. Cheers!

@Henri: if by "start" you mean that it cranks fine when hot or cold, but that the engine won't "catch" (start running by itself) quickly when warmed up, that could be many things. Could be temp sensor reporting that the engine is still cold and giving too much fuel when warmed up. Does the exhaust smell like raw gas at all? This is an indication of over-rich mixture and possibly a temp sensor gone bad. The engine isn't "chipped" is it? If so, all bets are off. You have to go to the "chipper" company and ask them.

Thanks! If you hear only clicking that means shaft goes out but not spinning. It can be fixed by cleaning connectors, relay inside solenoid or replacing brushes
