Awesome video man. I’ve done Vanos work on my S54 before and never tried aligning the spline teeth like that to where it smoothly starts going in. Now that I have the Vanos off again I’ll be doing it like that. Thanks for the video!

Hello, I need your help! I had the vanos unit removed, but both inlet & outlet helical gears still inside the hubs/cams. At this stage, I was turning the engine over to check timing and the inlet helical gear came out (before this happened I already marked up the helical tooth in relation to hub). However I think I turned the engine over to get the helical gear back in without realising the inlet cam was not turning but the exhaust was. Now my inlet camshaft seems to be completed out of time. I am not sure what to do? Will turning the engine over cause the valves to touch pistons if the inlet camshaft timing is way out?

Great video you deserve more views. What do you do if the timing is not correct? At what stage to you rectify the timing ?

Well, you'll know timing is incorrect because the car will be running really bad: it'll have misfires and the idle will be terrible. That's if timing is off by a tooth or two on the vanos gears. If it's really off, you might ruin your valves and/pistons because they'll come in contact. To know for sure, that's a good question: I guess in theory if no-one has touched your vanos/timing from the previous owners, then if you mark everything properly before disassembling and put everything back to where they are and follow each step to the dot, then you should be good to go. If not, then you'll have to take off everything in the vanos unit, pull the chain upward from either the exhaust or the intake side, and start putting the hubs and gears back while making sure the chain tension is even on both sides (the exhaust and intake sides), WHILE making sure the cut outs for the hub bolts for the gears are in their correct position so that the vanos when it IS all working can adjust itself properly every time. Hope that made sense. -Eugene

Is there no torque for the hubs ? You just made them tight .

Why dint change the oil pump disc? a broken tensioner can make noise like tin can and the exhaust hub can break without a reason;

I thought about it honestly. But from what I know, the E39's don't really have this problem like the E46's do.. Maybe I'll do it later once I do a full rebuild of this thing but for now, I just needed to get it running again.

These e46 m3 engines are freaking Highly complicated pieces of garbage. Its best to avoid buying one in the first place 👌..
