+Technical Purush hmm, I would recommend the circuit I used for my "portable Jacobs ladder " video, as its a safe intro to high voltage, as for learning I recommend just trying to build things constantly, perhaps find broken electronics and take them apart to learn how they work and use their parts, that's what I have found to be a good way to learn!

You can also drive the ignition coil with a triac (dimmer switch) and a 6uF AC capacitor in series to limit the current. I put 70 diodes (1N4007) in series in an oil fillled tube to rectify the output. Great source for HVDC for vacuum projects. May want to get the lead underwear out though due to the X-rays if you do decide to run it in a vacuum.

Seth Leith a mot is a great power supply except it's not due to overheating, dangerous amounts of current, but you can ballast it and add some caps for more violent arcs (it's really not resonant) just dumps more current from the caps....

Nice flyback coil driver. I have exploded a light bulb with HV through the glass, but that was using a metal probe near the glass and a 15kV 30mA transformer. It explodes violently, glass everywhere. lucky I didn't hurt myself. Ignition coil driver video would be nice to see. I have made one with two 6-volt lantern batteries and a relay wired up as a contained spark gap. For such a setup the ignition coil needs an external condenser.

hello there ! thats quite a nice plasma globe, i never tried it with an ignition coil ! is the light bulb by chance a 100w or more ? seems that bulbs with less wattage ratings have more air inside and the discharge doesnt work so well .. a few tips for the 555 circuit if your interested : 1 - a capacitor in parallel of the primary side of the transformer will allow the circuit to run better, keep the mosfet or power transistor running cooler and it consumes less power due to the cap. and primary side making a resonant circuit although i only tried with flyback transformers so experiment with values in between 100nF and 1 mF : 2- a safety gap for the transformer output will prolong the transformers life and should stop the secondary from arcing to the core .. a HV transformer left open circuit is not good for it : 3 - grounding pin 5 of 555 timer with a 100nF will allow it to run more stable .. and anyone who reads this, this circuit will run a flyback transformer with no problems .. if your interested, i have a good video explaining this circuit when used as a plasma speaker in full detail =) .. great videos cheers from Germany !

I want to try this bro, but the thing that i've got is 500watts bulb and flyback transformer from Sony. Will it work too?
@KeystoneScience5 жыл бұрын
Hmm, the flyback has to be ac... you can tell by how it looks, google “ac flyback” and compare, however it is very likely the flyback you have is DC as most on ‘newer’ CRTs are
@kieroribello46845 жыл бұрын
Any recommendations or another way bro for it to work? It is really hard to find ignition coil here in our place. That is only my problem because when in terms of oscillator, I really admire your work thats why I try it with the same values of components. Cheers bro!
@KeystoneScience5 жыл бұрын
An ignition coil is really what you need, is there a car scrap yard at all near you? That is where I got mine. If not, you could always try and wind your own (but that would take a long time). I’m sorry, but its probably best to find an ignition coil, although I will let you know if I think of any other kind of transformer that would work!

+Benjamin Otto thanks! Uhh I can't remember, I just went to a scrap yard and found like 4 of them, but really any old ignition coil should work fine
@margaqrt7 жыл бұрын
Keystone Science I did manage to find that particular ignition coil. For reference It's from a 95 Ford f150 (or equivalent). One thing I am quite surprised by is that the 555 isn't burning up when you pump the 30 volts in. I've gotten this circuit working pretty good at 12 volts. I've also noticed the 555s can fairly easily be fried from the high voltage return back into the circuit. In my lab I have a separate dedicated earth ground I use for testing arc length. I'm going to make some improvements on this circuit like adding a voltage divider to isolate the 555 from differing input voltages. So the frequency generator part of the circuit only gets 6-9 volts while the power transistor and coil get 12-30 volts. Also high frequency diodes in some places so no voltage can flow back into the 555 through the output pin, for example.
@lopezstallon84497 жыл бұрын
Benjamin Otto you need to power the 555 timer separately from ignition coil
