My wife just made 12 jars of homemade plum jam and 5 gallons of plum wine. Man she shredded her hands, ruined her nails and stained her nails too. I offered to help her but it took me ten minutes to prepare three plums lol. She was in despair and told me to leave it to her. Wine won’t be ready for a long old time as it’s chemical free, with no finings. Takes much longer to clear. The jam is delicious and my wife took great pride in giving a jar to neighbours, friends and family. I feel for you cause watching my wife made me realise how hard canning and all that is.

First time watcher... We moved to the Midwest last year and I'm committed to canning whatever I grow or am gifted this year! Most recent adventure was canning a 40 pound gift of beets! Next up, the plums on our two plum trees...the branches are so heavy that they are touching the ground. Thanks, Linda, loved this video and just subscribed.

Looks great! I have a few full size plum trees that probably produce 500+ plums each. We eat them as fast as we can but they all come ripe at the same time. I am definitely going to try this in a few months when they are ready. We have blackberries in every creek and roadside brambles everywhere so I'll be trying my hand at that as well. I'll be trying apricot this year also now that my apricot and pluot trees are producing as well. Strawberries from the garden too.

If you add the plum stones in the cooking fruit, they have pectin in them, then scoop the stones off the top as they will float..

Hi Linda, Great video. I thought I had every gadget for canning but then saw that wide red scoop you used to scoop up the chopped plums. That's a great idea. Can you tell me who makes it and where I can get one? My neighbor sells produce but give us all his seconds and stuff he can not sell-for FREE. Gave us two 1/2 bushels of 2 types of plums today which I am going to can. Thanks again for a great video. Look forward to hearing from you about the scoop.

When your doing a big batch like that at once, do you have a hard time getting the last of the jam in the jars as the jam is cooling and thickening? I did 3 batches of strawberry jam last night and cooked each batch separately and I put each batch in the canner because it was setting by the time I would fill the last couple of jars

Oh my goodness what a lot of work and sugar!!! Recently I picked 30 lbs plums from my neighbors tree. After washing n putting them in a big stockpot...covered them in water simmered for 30 minutes...took off most of the liquid put in fridge made great red juice!! Pureed the rest..skins on..NO SUGAR or anything else added... put into canning jars...tastes fabulous!!

I am feeling very overwhelmingly blessed!!

Great tutorial. I find that just throwing the plums seeds and all into the pot saves loads of time and saves lots of the meat that attaches to the seeds. Cook em down, let them cool, run them thru the food processor and strain out the seeds and put it back in the pot and bring it back to boil and jar it up!! All i throw out is the seeds and a bit of the skins that didn’t cook down

Thank you Linda, I have learned so much by watching your videos. I have a ton of plums that have been in the freezer and now it is time to take them out to make my Christmas gifts. I am a little concerned because they have a lot of juice now that they have defrosted, but I am going to follow your directions and hope for the best. Thank you so much. P.S. The one problem I always have is trying to figure out the canning time for my altitude of 5,656 ft., I think I have it down pat to add 10 minutes to the recommended canning time for Water-bath. P.S.S.. (Next project: Chicken recipes..Yay.!! My first time for chicken/my second time for meat.. I followed your recipe for Roast and OMG it is fantastic. My husband is now a believer...lol ) If you have any advice for me, please let me know. Blessing to you, your husband and all your beautiful pupper-do's. ~SuzyJCinColorado~

Just thought of something...I read at one time of a recipe called pear honey that made use of the skins and cores of the pear harvest and processed them down with sugar to get something that they called pear honey. Sounds like ever such a frugal practice with a lovely sweet reward at the end. Have you ever come across such a thing?

I pitted my plums, cooked them till tender, ran them through a food mill, put them in a pot with half the recommended amount of sugar, brought them to a boil and simmered them till they were reduced by half. I put the 7 pint jars in the freezer but you can do a wax seal. While the jam simmers keep tasting and add sugar if you think it needs it. I don't use pectin.

Ten Pound, Be very cautious about using commercial jars that aren't meant for canning. You may be able to use them for freezer jams, and perhaps if you are making jam that you properly process and seal with the wax method, but double-check this. Otherwise it's not worth the risk. But, you can often find good deals on canning supplies on Craigslist or the classifieds :)

My gosh those look so good! I would love to make some but no one around here wants to give away any fruit. And I can understand that! Jobs are hard to come by and people are just trying to survive by selling everything they can. If I get any pecans this year I may try selling them! LOL

If you cut the plums in small batched and add sugar, place in fridge overnight the way you would do with strawberries, then simply place in pot the next day and simmer until it reduces and do it in small batches, you won't have the extra water. Just don't add water. Just cut the plums and add sugar as you would do for strawberries and let them sit in fridge overnight. Don't add any water and you won't need the pectin. That's the problem
