The sand I used was from my parents private beach that is continually tested for e coli contamination levels. You can view the results at barnstablecountyhealth (dot) org.

You soap base is so light colored and looks perfect for adding colorants. Would you mind sharing which oils you use to attain such a light base? You don't have to give exact amounts. Thanks. I've really enjoyed watching your videos!

I don't pay for crushed volcanic rock (pumice). My holiday house is a 2 minute walk from a surf beach so the sand there is particularly small-grained. I just wash it a lot before using it... excellent exfoliation. I also have an apricot tree and tried crushing the pips for the same purpose... but it killed the blender lol.

Thanks, CB!! Makes sense. I was thinking more about swimmer's itch from snails (we get quite a bit of that around here). Yep, don't eat the soap! :-D Making peeps this weekend - are you going to be around if I get into trouble? xx MMM

Please see my reply to cherylynnessoap below. If your sand has potential contaminates, it can be pre-washed in bleach water then dried before using.

Is the sand you use regular sand off the beach, or special sand? I make a gardener's bar with pumice, but I live right on the beach, so have a great source of supplies if it's ordinary sand!

I agree :) But some people have weakened immune systems + as soapers we always have err on the side of caution.

I am very interested in your e-book. Concerning the pumice addition...how much pumice per lb, usually? I am making my first batch and not quite sure. Thank You for your comprehensive delivery.

Very cool !! So how do you clean or sterilize the sand..or does the lye do that for you? Everyone has access to sand of some kind!! xx S.

No offensive taken... it was a great point to make to the class. However, it is important to note that e coli levels vary by location + the danger of e coli comes primarily from ingestion. As the sand it mixed with soap, washing with it makes the bacteria associated with e coli nearly non existent. After all we are not eating the soap :)
