Pine Tar Soap Recipe | Dr.Squatch Copycat Recipe

Making pine tar soap is a fun challenge! This is my recipe for a copycat version of Dr. Squatch Pine Tar Soap. Learn step by step how to make pine tar soap!

10 oz coconut oil
7 oz olive oil
9 oz lard

Good to know about that pine tar product I just saw it on walmart's website too.. I was wondering whether it's a better deal to get into smelling like Dr. squatchs pinetar soap... I'll research to see if there is a safest pine tar on the market for skin application.. So far we know it shouldn't containt creosote and 1,4 dioxane, and that pine tar should be closed-kilned. ChatGPT says that I'd rather extract it's scent into any care products I want, which is very easy, and it gave me the steps on how to do it 😅

Run those numbers through a lye calculator first to make sure you have the right amount of lye. I have definitely made lovely soap with those ingredients just always double check with a lye calculator any time you change a recipe!

I let it cure on a rack with good air circulation until it is completely cured 4-6 weeks. Then you can store it however you like. In a bag or a basket, or stacked on a shelf.

I'll answer my own question based on your blog "I calculated the cost per loaf. My mold holds approximately 32 ounces and if I cut it properly I should get 8 bars of soap from the mold. If my math is correct the cost per bar is approximately $2.50. So there is actually quite a savings if you make this yourself versus buying the bars at $6 each!"

Good evening. I'm Travis. I love pine tar soap as well. So I decided to give it a shot in making my first soap. I followed your instructions and ingredients. The only thing I did differently was I mixed everything but the lye and didn't use ice. After mixing well and Keeping the mixture around 90 degrees. Then I added the lye. The temperature didn't rise fast at all. Took nearly 10 minutes to go from 90ish to 115 degrees. 120 degrees was the highest temperature. I noticed the lye took forever to dissolve. I'm not quite sure the lye was 100% dissolved. After 20 minutes or so it started to trace. I have a question for ya. Should I mix the lye in just water? I think the lye will fully dissolve much quicker.

You should always dissolve the sodium hydroxide in water if that is what you are asking. Even if you don't freeze the water you should use the amount called for in the recipe. Is that what you are asking?

In MP, you can only do 2 tbsp of additives before you start diminishing the cleansing bubbles. You can use a triple butter base or the hemp base, even mix them up! I used to use those and they always come out perfect 😊

I'm sorry, I'm US and function in ounces. My understanding is 1 oz equals 28 grams. You could do the math of multiplying each ounce amount by 28. That would give you the grams. Also if you search there are some cheat sheets that give you the amounts already. I hope that helps!

I have not tried that. You really should just reformulate the recipe. Removing the pine tar will also not cause trace to happen quickly so you would need to use a stick blender.

I don't know a thing about making soap let alone doing something more advanced like this, but... my brain makes interesting connections and I have to ask your opinion because I have a feeling future me will want to know the answer... would it work to infuse the pine tar into the castor oil before making the soap? Of course the infusion process takes a while... but ... I am remembering a video about pine pitch and how sticky it is.. the lady, April of She Is Of The Woods, showed that using a little bit of oil will have that pitch off your fingers in no time. Then saw you holding the castor oil and pour it in... with the pitch that got left behind in the bowl right behind your hand.... and then I remembered another of her videos where she was infusing the oil with pine pitch (and some other things)... so I got to wondering if an oil infusion with pine tar would work for soap making..... ??

I think their base soap is pretty much the same for most of their soaps. There are some really nice musk oils out there. I'm suspect of things that say "natural" you just don't know what that really means.

I did something wrong, but not sure what. There were "pockets" of liquid that were clearly lye solution in the bottom of my soap. Everything else from 1/2" from the bottom to the top of the soap was great - tested an 8 pH level, but the lye solution was caustic. There was probably a total of 1 tsp lye solution harbored in pockets at the bottom of the soap when I took it out of the mold after 24 hours. Any idea what I did wrong?

I'm sorry it didn't turn out. My best guess without seeing it personally would be that it just wasn't thoroughly mixed. It can be challenging with the pine tar because it wants to set up so quickly.

I'm sorry that wasn't clear, coming to trace is when the batter begins to thicken so that when you lift it up and let some run on the surface of the batter it leaves a little lifted trace. Essentially it is thickening.

Typically ingredients can't just be swapped out. You can use a lye calculator and swap out different fats and see how the amount of lye would change with each fat. Try something like palm oil in the same amount as the lard and see what changes. the-sage.com and brambleberry both have good lye calculators. You also want to make sure that the fat you use has similar properties to the lard.

Interesting, you could wait 48 hours and try again. Usually 24 hours is good but it does depend on the temperature and humidity in your home. Unless it wasn't mixed well enough. Did it come to a thick trace?

It was a thick trace. I unfolded and cut at 40 hrs. A few spots were a bit soft and some of the tar stayed at the bottom of the mold.

​@conniesommerfield4191 if you make it again, mix as much as you can with a whisk or spatula to keep the race light. It will give a little more time to mix in the year. Try adding the year when you're ready to pour and avoid the stick blender.

My husband doesn't care for the grit either, while my son loves it. To each his own. If you eliminate the pumice that would definitely cut down on the grit. The oatmeal if left in will give a softer grit but it will still be a rougher bar. I am working on my own recipe for a pine tar soap without any grit, hopefully in a month or so!

Dr. Squatch is nothing to brag about. It is about the worst soap company out there. Their pine tar soap is junk. Total junk.
