Robert shows us his favorite, quick method to mix casting slip for mold making. - #ceramicvideos #ceramics #pottery #handmade #ceramic #wheelthrown #homedecor #interiordesign #corvusmoonpottery #makersgonnamake #potterylove #handmadeceramics #ceramicartist #artistsoninstagram #potteryart
Corvus Moon Pottery specializes in fine art ceramics, crystalline porcelain and the raku firing technique. While our focus is on wheel-thrown forms, we also produce sculpture, tile, and primitive styled pottery. Using the natural surroundings of the Missouri Ozarks for inspiration, we express ourselves with clay and fire.

I wish you had how to make a four part plaster mold like the one you have for the skull. There is nothing on the Internet for that that I have found only two part . And a silicone one. I am attempting to make Tiki mugs I have done 4 in the past

Could I use ball clay for slip casting ? I tried with kaolin ( china clay )for slip casting but I couldn't cast even though I maintained specific gravity of 1.8. I used soda ash and sodium silicate as deflocculant. Could some one help me which clay is best suitable to prepare slip for casting.

Hi Arunkumar, A good mix for casting slip (^6) is EPK - 10% Nepheline Syenite - 5% Silica/Flint -5% University of the Arts - Philadelphia formula they use in their ceramics division. This has worked well for me in the past. I use this when I don't have any clay leavings lying around. If you want to make a decent clay throwing body out of this, just add 1% bentonite. I wouldn't use ball clay for anything slip related - it's WAY too sticky and is almost impossible to pull from a mold.

Hey 🌸 Could I make slip with air dry clay? My mom doesn’t have an kiln and she has some plaster slip doll making molds that she would like to use because we don’t get air dry clay slip here 😭 Alternatively- is there any other medium that she could use to make her dolls with plaster slip casting molds? Thank you so much 😘

That's a great question - I don't see why not, but changing the structure of the clay that much might make the clay want to crack when it dries.

Hi I was wondering if you can tell me where to get any skull molds! Human cow anything! I can't seem to locate any!! I found a skeleton decanter and a cross bone shotglass that's badass! But want heads,mugs and so forth 😁

Do you have to put your casting slip through a mesh container if there’s very little grog? I often use a mix of white porcelain and Laguna white clay. If these were mixed do they need to be poured through a mesh container? If so, do you know where I can buy one of those kinds of mesh containers?

Hi Emma! - No, you don't have to. The drill mixer takes care of most of it. I've just gotten into the habit because I mix a lot of glazes and they're pretty important to sieve.

I bought slip from a business that was closing. They were the only supplier that I had ever found in this area so I ordered 15, 5 gallon buckets. I still have 9 left and they are about 16 years old! It does settle in the buckets and is hard as hell to work up again but honestly the older stuff is much much better than the new!!

I’m so glad I came upon your video again. I just ordered some stoneware slip from Blick. 2 of the bags were a different type of clay. When I poured the bags into my bucket I noticed it was realllly sticky but wet and flowing! I have never even felt slip like this. It dries in a few seconds! Any idea what the problem may be? I see when you poured your slip out of the mold you put it right back so the hole is visible, do you leave them upside down at all? Thanks so much
@corvusmoonpottery
@corvusmoonpottery 2 жыл бұрын
I usually don't leave them upside-down for very long. The best way I can tell you to test any casting slip is to pour a little onto some plaster. In an hour, you should see the slip curling off of the plaster all by itself. Slip needs to be EXTREAMLY de-flocculated (more clay than water).

@@corvusmoonpottery Thank you so much. I am pouring water off the slip every day. I’m not getting much now so should I just start adding some darvan 7 as you did in the video? My drill is getting to get really hot after I use it for about 10 minutes so I think I need a new one. Also, I started using stoneware slip. Is everything the same with that??

Can you use wet clay to make slip then put in darvon
@corvusmoonpottery
@corvusmoonpottery 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephanie, It depends. If you have a bunch of wet lumps of clay - even if you do add Darvon-7, it probably would take too long to break i tall down or gum up your mixer too quickly. HEY, don't let me stop you - try it out, it might work great for you. experiment!
