I made a tiny mold to make halves of a ball. I used regular clay, and not needing much to try it out, only made a little. I used sodium silicate, intending to add 1 drop, but 2 went in. It poured well but after sitting in the mold it became so thick that I had to scoop out the excess. Maybe it didn't need the 2nd drop.

Hi, I noticed the ward burner is fairly quiet compared to my bog standard weed burner, which really makes a racket when I fire. Is there a difference between a weed burner torch and venturi burner in terms of noise? Cheers.

Hi, D.R. This is 'The' cone 6 crystalline glaze out of John Britt's book (The complete Guide to Mid-Range Glazes) The firing schedule is also from the book. If you don't have this book and you fire to cone 6, you really should get it - it's one of the best glaze books on the market.

You said this is more of a glaze than a stain....does that mean you don't put any clear over it? Also is this the same technic for your raku sprigs or are you using something different on those? If it's different I would love it if you could share. Thank you!
@corvusmoonpottery
@corvusmoonpottery Жыл бұрын
Hi Catherine, Yes, it's like (50 Gerstley Borate - 25 Red Iron Oxide - 25 Rutile) There is no clear over it but I do wax it before dipping in glaze. As far as the Raku is concerned, that is 'underglaze color' and we do cover that with a clear raku glaze.
@BurgardPottery
@BurgardPottery Жыл бұрын
@@corvusmoonpottery is that a clear crackle glaze, or just regular smooth? If it's regular would you mind sharing the recipe? I'm trying to get things together so I can starting working on some raku after I get my cast off my wrist...hopefully Friday. Sorry if I become a pest but I find it easier to learn from someone that's been there and done that, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. I will get back to you with some kiln questions at some point. Thanks again for all your help!

Why not use this for bisque firing? just curious your thoughts. Also, what was the total fire time?
@corvusmoonpottery
@corvusmoonpottery Жыл бұрын
Bisque firing typically takes longer than most finished, glaze firings. (up to 10 hours). You COULD use this little gas kiln for that, but you would go through a ton of propane. Maybe if you had it hooked up to city natural gas it would be a possibility. These raku firings only take 30 minutes to get glaze melt.

Could I use ball clay for slip casting ? I tried with kaolin ( china clay )for slip casting but I couldn't cast even though I maintained specific gravity of 1.8. I used soda ash and sodium silicate as deflocculant. Could some one help me which clay is best suitable to prepare slip for casting.
@corvusmoonpottery
@corvusmoonpottery Жыл бұрын
Hi Arunkumar, A good mix for casting slip (^6) is EPK - 10% Nepheline Syenite - 5% Silica/Flint -5% University of the Arts - Philadelphia formula they use in their ceramics division. This has worked well for me in the past. I use this when I don't have any clay leavings lying around. If you want to make a decent clay throwing body out of this, just add 1% bentonite. I wouldn't use ball clay for anything slip related - it's WAY too sticky and is almost impossible to pull from a mold.
@byemmabekah
@byemmabekah Жыл бұрын
Do you have to put your casting slip through a mesh container if there’s very little grog? I often use a mix of white porcelain and Laguna white clay. If these were mixed do they need to be poured through a mesh container? If so, do you know where I can buy one of those kinds of mesh containers?
@corvusmoonpottery
@corvusmoonpottery Жыл бұрын
Hi Emma! - No, you don't have to. The drill mixer takes care of most of it. I've just gotten into the habit because I mix a lot of glazes and they're pretty important to sieve.

Can I use normal gas instead of propane gas? Please answer me
@corvusmoonpottery
@corvusmoonpottery 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, In order to use "City Gas" or natural gas in this kiln the hole in the venturi burner (orifice) needs to be changed. I'm unsure at this time whether it needed to be slightly larger or slightly smaller. Natural gas is far less volatile than propane so your firing times would be different to. I haven't fired raku using natural gas (yet).
