For anyone else following along on newer Blender versions: - The hair root, tip, and diameter settings are under a category called "Hair Shape" - For the material, there is no "Hair Info" node, but you can use a "Curves Info" one

Hey man! Loved the video! I learned how to make carpets from you in this tutorial, but something I discovered is that instead of turning up the hair count super high, you can actually go underneath the “Children” tab and select “Interpolated”. What this does is it places X amount of hairs randomly for every initial hair. The nice thing about it is that: The “child” hairs interpret traits from the surrounding hairs based on their distance from them in a gradual manner, which looks more realistic because of how carpets are usually matted down in patterns (since objects that stand/walk on them are usually wider than a single carpet strand). Second, child trait let’s you use different quantities of hairs in the preview and the final render, meaning that you can make finer adjustments while finding your desired hair material and look without having to change it during static renders. Thanks again for the video!

Hey mate! Thanks for the video, it's a great tutorial! - One question though, WHY did we use the displacement? The hair particles do what they do, what about the displacement; was there a need for it? I don't really get it's use here.
@nlbadguy3 жыл бұрын
Displacement creates surface imperfections on the carpet, which reflects on the surface once you place the strands. You can also add randomness to the particle system and create an even better effect. This was my take on it: imgur.com/a/ThDQisp you can see subtle waviness on the top of the strands. That's what displacement modifier does.

Thank you, your tutorial taught me some great things!! Honestly, I never used the hair info before...like I just didn't notice it there. Ha ha! I'm gonna try also randomizing particles with Hair Info (said object by mistake). I've always found that fun. XD

I'm new at blender. So, I'm able to figure things out, but I feel like some things should be mentioned for beginners. I had to look around for edit mode (found it). And how did you add the loop cut that way? After pressing control-R, I had to click one at a time after seeing a line appear. Clicking and dragging didn't work. What did you do?

7:12 In Blender 3.0, entering 10% for the Viewport Display will display only 10% of your carpet, etc. (i.e. one edge section, not 10% distributed throughout the surface).

I had the same problem. In top of the window you have default then Scene and then a tab "Blender Render". Click on it and select "Cycles Render" instead. The missing setting will appear.

If you set the particle system's children setting to interpolated and the amount to 10, you'll get even better and more realistic result :D

For some reason the hair shows up as the object mode strands (the little thin white lines) when I'm in render mode. *Edit: Also in the node editor for the carpet texture, I can't find the 'Hair Input' Output.*

Would be way more helpful if you mention the names of the sections instead of just saying "go here, go there". Assuming you've probably corrected this in your future tutorials.

You need to convert the particles to a mesh before exporting. If you are uncertain about doing this just do a quick google search and you should find it easily.
