Beautiful bowls. I've used magazines and fliers, but not gift wrap. I will give it a go and see how that works out. Thank you for sharing your work and talent with us.❤

I've never seen one of your videos before, but this was great! I love that you showed when things went wrong--I kinda hate it when everything is perfect in videos. When I run into a problem on those projects, I have no idea how to fix it. I have a question. Is there any reason that you couldn't tape the rolls when you're forming them?
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts9 ай бұрын
Things do not always go perfectly for sure! Glad you appreciated what can go wrong and how to fix it. You can try using tape but if the wraps are going to go I don’t think the tape will help plus it might tear the paper as well.

Thank you for using different types of paper to make your baskets. My biggest pile of paper is magazine stock that Ii want to use puroposely I would be tempted to tint the glue. even adding some fine fibers for strength and texture. Excellent tutorial!

I've been making newspaper bowls and coasters for about the last 15 years. I look for videos such as this to find/learn any new tips. I'd like to offer a few pointers. Paper has a "grain" like fabric especially newspaper. It helps before you start your straws to figure which way the paper tears easily. At a corner tear a small area. If it tears easily with a smooth tear, this is your grain. If you tear perpendicular to your 1st tear you'll find the tear is tough and ragged. Cut your paper strips in the direction of the grain. Magazine papers and book papers I find it better if you fold strips instead of straws. Those of us with arthritis will immediately feel the difference in the hands and fingers. I use 4 inch wide strips. In rolling your straws it's best to use a 30/60 angle placement of you skewer than a 45°angle. Also no matter how you start, you'll find one end of the straw narrower than the other. Sometimes you'll be able to set your straws so the narrow end straw #1 fits easily into the larger end of straws #2. You can make your straws more pliable by lightly misting with water, don't over spray. I've been using this to play with turning the straws or paper strips into yarn and knitting small swatches. The only time I saturate with liquid is when I apply the glue. Place the glue on both sides. It makes it easier to mold and shape the ball with a longer time to shape your project. Takes 48 to 72 hours to fully dry. Have fun discovering where this craft can take you. There are many videos on YT especially from India and Mexico. Enjoy!!!!!

Thanks Yvonne for sharing your expertise of many years making paper bowls. I’m sure my viewers will appreciate your advice. There are so many ways to make them for sure. Lots of different techniques to try. I purposely showed mistakes and what not to do and some things you should do. I cut my paper with a rotary cutter instead of tearing so I wasn’t concerned about the grain but yes paper has a grain for sure. Lots of info to get into a video for sure.

Yvonne what do you use to coat your coasters with if you are using them as a trivet for hot dishes?
@jenthulhu Жыл бұрын
Thanks for these tips, Yvonne! I've seen a few paper crafting videos like this in Spanish--which I speak, but not fluently. Such a fun way to recycle paper. I've got a ton of brown paper grocery sacks that I want to try recycling this way.

@@jenthulhu I love the idea of using paper sacks. I just wonder about it being too stiff....maybe misting it would be worth a try. Let me know how it turns out.

EXCELLENT VIDEO SOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL Very Professionally Done, Thank YOU so much for sharing this great video I enjoyed EVERY Minute of it... BTW... The RING on your Left Hand... I have that EXACT Ring on my right hand... it used to be my wedding ring... I live in New Mexico and we got Turquoise Rings for our wedding rings... 1972

Glad you enjoyed it! Oh! We have the same taste in rings. I used to have a solitaire diamond wedding ring and isn’t practical with all the crafts I do and decided to go with what I like. Which is turquoise and silver. So now it replaces my wedding ring too.

Great new craft Patti! I would love to see a newspaper bowl made with just the black and white newsprint. Then I would probably make it a lower bowl and hang it on the wall in a bo-ho type grouping. I'm a sucker for black and white, but do love the colorful ones you made as well.
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Жыл бұрын
Oh yes! I agree. The black and white is always a winner. I had so many ideas but had to stop or the video would have been 2 hours long. Lol. I want to make a larger platter and as you said it would great on a wall with a few more.

Would it make sense to form them by pressing them over an existing bowl? If you are enjoying the paper tubes, you can kinda combine what you do with the rope baskets, going to have to hand sew that however ;o The nice thing about them is they are hollow and light so they insulate well for a tea cozy, for instance. I roll mine on a thin spaghetti so they're probably a little denser and narrower.
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Жыл бұрын
It might work forming them over a bowl but it doesn’t take much to lose the form so one would have to be careful when pulling it down over the bowl. Ahh spaghetti would work as well. Also others just do folds instead of rolling. Saves on flattening them afterwards. Lots of options and things to try.

But Why not form it on the buttom og another glas bowl?
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Жыл бұрын
Give it a try and see if it works for you. The bowl would have to be the exact same size. I find that you need to use your thumb and fingers to work up each layer evenly. That would be harder to do if it is sitting on another bowl.
