In modern smd components that are in double or more layers pcbs one general rule is that heat it until the solder melts and remove the component.So exactly temperature adjustment is not needed because it is a handheld tool and can vary manually the distance from the component and the delivered heat to the pcb.As long as temperature is not in crazy limits above 500 C to destroy pcb or the heating element itself then everything will work fine.Great inspiring projects and i give you congrats.

I'm thinking about building one with an old laptop power brick similar to a Saike 8858. In my opinion, the problem with the system as shown is that this gun is designed for a cool down timer (the reed switch). This is needed so the heating element has air flow for a few seconds after shutdown. Larger heat guns don't have this kind of feature, but they are usually made of ultra high temperature plastics. Heat guns also have more bulky air insulation space between the heating element and the body of the unit, I imagine they also have a lot more mica insulation than this little guy. The heat guns I've taken apart have a lot more mica than would fit inside this compact design.

What's the purpose of the power brick? Heat gun runs on mains voltage.

Once i thought to buy only the hand held part and make my own controller,display fan and heater drivers,but the price of the complete tool is 40-50 euros and ready-with the help of some luck-to work avoiding any other mess for code writing and the assembly of components.It looks powerful 700w and already i have ordered it expecting to arrive.

Why do so many people heat the parts they want to salvage from the upside? Don't you damage the components less when heated from underneath?

Very very nice. I will try to build one, specially since I don't need too use this kind of tool very often. What about air flow control? I am guessing that DC voltage (24V) regulation would enable fan speed control. Is that correct?
@sergeikrasnikov
@sergeikrasnikov 8 жыл бұрын
That's correct. For example, 1) if you have 12V DC from a PC power supply, you can use a DC-DC boost converter to increase the voltage up to 24V. By doing so, you will get the fan full speed. 2) If you have 19V DC from a notebook power supply and you want to lower the fan speed then you need a DC-DC buck converter to decrease the voltage.

How is the reed switch implemented to cool down the blow gun ? If one wants to have the option of auto cool down for the gun with the use of the reed switch wire in this porject, I am unable to understand as to where would the single reed switch wire connect ? the second wire is however connected to one of the thermocouple wire ... i am unable to imagine/guess the circuit to have this implemented. Can somebody shed light on how the reed switch wire could be used in this DIY project ? thank.s

Hi! Bough the dimmer and the heat gun. Hooked it up. Problem is, that it is hot enough to melt solder at the very lowest setting. Turning it up makes it too hot. So not much ajustment possible with this. My dimmer works fine with a light bulb. What can be wrong?

You should try to adjust the small potentiometer with a screwdriver. Be extremely careful don't touch any metal part of the dimmer when it's connected to the high-voltage line. See a wiring diagram here drive.google.com/open?id=0BwsaCaa887AuSHB0MkhySk5jZjA

@sergeikrasnikov
@sergeikrasnikov 7 жыл бұрын
For a heating element It doesn't matter if your current is AC or DC. As long as you deliver the same power to the heating element (P=I*V).
@okicom
@okicom 7 жыл бұрын
how many watt does the heating element need ? i have a 48W soldering station with temperature control.
@sergeikrasnikov
@sergeikrasnikov 7 жыл бұрын
I don't have the proper equipment to test the power consumption of the heat gun. But I think your soldering station can't deliver enough power to the heat gun. The heating element resistance is about 60 Ohm. The typical soldering station max voltage is Vmax=24V (DC). Therefore P=I*V=V^2/R = 9.6 W. But typical heat guns specifications claim that their power is about hundreds of Watts. So It's not sufficient.

Check your dimmer: connected to it just a light bulb 220V. If the bulb lights up, your dimmer is OK and you'll have to open the gun and check wires to resistance. (abaut 60-70 Ohms between them)

Ok, maybe this can work: 220v to dimmer and in ac dc converter. Then dimmer to gun and frim dc to dc dimmer for fan speed. So i can make a box with ac input to all three devices and make output to gun on frint side with 2 knobs for regulating temperature and fan speed?

Is it possible to just plug this in a hakko soldering work station? I.e. Hakko 928.
@UpcycleElectronics
@UpcycleElectronics 7 жыл бұрын
hentai nat I wondered the same thing myself. I don't think it will work because this unit has a heater coil resistance designed for mains voltage. The Hakko irons run from a step down transformer to power the heating coil. The thermocouple voltage of the iron is also calibrated on the ones with temperature readings so this would not function either.
@HentaiNat
@HentaiNat 7 жыл бұрын
Upcycle Electronics tnx, I was just wondering if we could utilize the sensor for the heater.
@UpcycleElectronics
@UpcycleElectronics 7 жыл бұрын
hentai nat If you look up the channel KainkaLabs (no affiliation) and look for his 2 videos on the Atten Digital soldering station he reverse engineers the heating element circuit. The Atten design is basically a cheaped-out Hakko. It incorporates the themocouple measurement in series with the heating element instead of using an extra set of terminals like the Hakko... However, the measurement part of the circuit is very similar. The Atten design is just measuring the temperature during the PWM off cycle instead of having a continuous analog measurement available for the microcontroller to sample. The measurement circuit is rather simple. It's just a few 1% resistors and a LM324 op amp. Not that you want to build this circuit... Personally, I'd look into ways of measuring the temperature independently. A thermo voltage is usually measured through the mA range on most multimeters. You need a microcontroller to scale this to a temperature. Alternatively you could just note the scale visually and use a simple $0.99 led Voltmeter from online vendors. There are also cheap units like the MH1210W that could do far more for less than $10. The thermocouples used in these things are just typical cheap K-type designs. The only real issue is calibration as different thermocouple designs will have different properties such as resistance that must be scaled at some point along the signal amplification chain. You might even be able to take your station apart, duplicate the analog temperature circuit with it's own calibration potentiometer. Then Simply add a switch that shuts off the Iron and sends the new temperature circuit to the MCU in place of the original. If you watch the KainkaLabs Atten videos you will see the temperature readings aren't exactly true temperature readings anyways. They are more like a scale that requires some 'understanding and translation' by the end user.
