This is so cool. ( I watched part 2 first.) Excited to try this soon. I plan to furl the sails and I don't have a sewing machine, so I'm thinking about scribing pencil lines for the flap joints instead of stitching them.

I have the same problem - no sewing machine. so I first took a rectangular piece of fabric, glued it and gave it to the tailor just to sew the joints of the flaps. I wouldn't entrust him with a more complex job :) But, there are a few more requests for imitation of seams. For example, you can use a microsaw circular blade (for Dremmel or similar) to fix it on some kind of handle and make a couple of passes through the glued fabric with it.

@@shipmodelideas I like that Dremel blade idea a lot. Thanks!

I watched part 2 first and sought this out. Beautiful, authentic sails! May i know what kind of fabric you used?

Thank you. The fabric I had at that time was a thin fabric for shirts. But it was actually not thin enough for 1/72 scale. You can use any thin (as much thin as possible) fabric for shirts or cambric (batiste).

Это циркулярный нож. Лезвие в виде вращающегося диска. Удобно резать ткань и фетр - не дает складок.

Where did you get the patterns?
@shipmodelideas
@shipmodelideas Жыл бұрын
I'm not quite sure that I understood correctly what you mean by 'patterns'? If you're building something from a kit, blueprints or sail drawings are usually included. If you're doing something from scratch, there are books with the typical appearance of sails. Normally, you would look for the typical sail look of a desired historical era.

@@shipmodelideas the templates for the sails.

So, I understood you correctly. See my answer above. In this case drawings or templates were supplied with the kit.

Some models may be assembled without sails. They may look good as well.

What did you use to age the sails?
@shipmodelideas
@shipmodelideas Жыл бұрын
that time it was “dark walnut” alcohol based stain, in other projects I also used tea and artistic oil paints.

Ah, ok. I read about using those other methods. I also forgot to ask but what type of glue did ubuse as well? My wife is sewing my sails and she said if you starch your sails it will also give them that affect. Do you agree?
@shipmodelideas
@shipmodelideas Жыл бұрын
Well, let's be honest here. When it comes to matters of agreement, listening to our wives is always the wisest choice. :) But on a more serious note: In my case, I opted for PVA glue. However, if you're feeling adventurous, you can give starch a try. Just keep in mind that one of the important functions of the glue is to prevent the threads of the fabric from unraveling. If starch can accomplish the same task effectively for the fabric you're working with, then by all means, go for it. As for me, I'm sticking with PVA glue.

Must be nice to have paper templates, I got my first model ship, a rather simple one from temu, has no directions for masts, sails, or rigging. I have to completely wing it.
@shipmodelideas
@shipmodelideas 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's easier when the kit comes with templates and guides. But sometimes even this does not help much, since they may not be accurate enough. In such cases, I try to find external sources - there are many books on ship modeling in general and even on a specific type or ship.
