How To: Make Silicone Molds of odd size resin parts

Here is a guide to making molds for odd sized items to resin cast. This will work for bodies also but those are two-piece molds and I'm doing this as a one-piece mold.

Great tutorial! That silicone and resin kit you found seems to work well. At first I was thinking you were too excessive in the amounts and size of your mold but you got a much durable mold. In my case I would be throwing most of it out the next time I want to mold something. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. It’s a balancing act on how much you want to use. The thicker the mold, the less likely it will stretch out and your parts won’t be warped. But it is also harder to flex and get your parts out. This silicone is also harder and will hold its form better but can also tear easier.

One tip for you…instead of mold release, dust the mold cavities with fine talcum powder…be sure to turn the mold over and tap out any excess. The powder will break the surface tension of the resin and help eliminate bubbles.

Okay, so many questions: 1) I would have really loved to see a cost breakdown of what that actually cost to do those small parts. The cost of the silicone, the cost of the resin. I know you're buying much more than you used, but some sort of cost breakdown would be nice to see. 2) In the case of the dash, no desire to make a squish mold so you aren't filling that back side? 3) Are you worried about messing up the detail using that toothpick to poke at possible bubbles in those gauge areas? I'm sure I'll think of more later, but that's good for now. 😁😎 Great video! 👍

Cost changes and availability are big factors and can change rapidly now. I bought these through Amazon and the silicone was on back order at the time and I waited a few months. I’m also not looking to do any videos based on budget. So don’t expect any How To do things on the cheap. On the dash. I want to have access to the front so I can get the bubbles away when I can. Once cured then I can grind away what I don’t want. Yes I’m using more material with each cast but the quality is higher. Also with the tooth pick, I’m just lighting dragging it and pulling the bubbles away that are stuck. This has to be done right away when it is thin. Once it starts to thicken. The bubble will be harder to move. If you get aggressive you can damage the mold.

Maybe you can preserve the mold if you coat it with something like Vaseline then put it into a zip tight bagging and mild warm dish soap and water clean before each use and repeat to store it again for future use seems like that may work and it last for a very long time something I'd try

Yes and no. A body is done in two parts and a lot more care is put into it on how you make the mold.

Another great how to question have you tried to hook up some way for when you pour the silicone in the mold that Vibrates the mold to release the air bubbles

I know of people doing it but I myself have not. Two reasons, one is noise and possible walking off the shaker. The other is the vibrations might loosen the clay. If I were to try it. I would use clear silicone to seal the box first before I put silicone in it as a stronger bond.

Keeping bubbles out of the wheel lips is a real pain.
