This simple RF choke is my recent home made project. This choke I will use with my HEX BEAM antenna. It's very easy to build it. I hope you enjoy this video :)
- ferrite core: FT240-43
- coaxial cable: Helukabel RG58 www.conrad.sk/...
- cable gland: www.sos.sk/pro...
- ABS enclosure: KRADEX Z111H www.kradex.eu/...
- connectors: SO239 4-holes socket, PL259 for RG58

Every type of coaxial cable has a specification list that includes the minimum bend radius. You must use a type of cable with a small enough minimum bend radius such that it will work with the thickness of the core you are using for the choke. If you exceed the minimum bend radius, you risk having the center conductor of the cable migrate through the soft dielectric and make contact with the inside of the braided shield, and shorting out the choke.

Great video Paul. Very helpful to see you build this choke. As a retired electrician in Australia, that plastic thing is called a "cable gland" down here as others have also said. As an additional note to that, the black cable glands are UV rated and fully weatherproof and won't deteriorate if outside in the sun for many years. Thank you my friend.😊73

When I made mine, I used 2 x SO-239 sockets, not a pigtail. I made a second one with N-Type sockets aswell. I also made one with SMA connectors for my SDR using an FT140-43. All work well.

A real good test is to put a dummy load on 1 end and test SWR from the other. That way your soldering is tested and not causing you and antenna faults.

The purpose of the choke is to attenuate common mode current. But you never measured the choking impedance- so how do you know it is performing choking action? Dale W4OP

You could have made more turns around the torroid which would have made the choke more effective. I would have used an SO239 at both ends of the box. The silicon sealant should be installed during the installation of the fasteners and connectors. Silicon grease on the gasket helps it to seat better and help preserve the gasket material. Also to make it more watertight.

Why did you make a RF Choke using this method, instead of using the multiple ferrite cores placed over the coaxial cable? Does it work better? Do the ferrite cores get too hot? 73

Very valid points! I hope the Govt is listening. The courts have made this illogical rule of 10 years old ban in NCR. They're not subject matter experts. It's a flawed decision no doubt. There is nothing in a term year old car that has puc to create more pollution. Very well put Saab! We need to spread this video far and wide.

Mám RG58 a jádro FT240-43. Taky ti bere signál? Zkoušel si to?

You don't have to "hope that it would work because you can measure its inductance between the shield going in and out, then calcullate its reactance.....5000 ohms would be more than adequate, I think yours will be more.

Coax (any cable) has a minimum bend radius, once you go beyond the minimum bend radius, the coax will begin to fail. As the center conductor migrates it can short out, and the impedance will change at that point..

I was told that silicone rubber sealant should never be used on antenna connections or wiring, because the chemicals which are used to cure the rubber will oxidize the metal and lead to failure or poor connections. Is this not true?

@@Capt_Duffy to check the insertion loss for common mode currents (ideally it should be infinite)you put the central of ch0 with two resistance of 25 ohm to the two leads of a side of the balun and the central of ch1 with two resistance of 25 ohms to the other side of the balun, you bound the grounds of ch0 and ch1 togheter and you measure with s11 "logmag",remember to adjust the reading of 2db higher if you calibrate the nanovna normally. To check differential mode insertion loss:(that ideally should be 0) connect the central of ch0 to one lead of a side of the balun and the ground of ch0 to the other lead and you do the same for the other side, there isn't a polarity
