I have to tell you that as I was successfully pulling my first strap off the tube, I heard you say “leave a comment below and let me know how you make your straps”. I started laughing and said out loud to you on my iPad “ I don’t make straps, because I never had anyone show me this technique!” 😂. I am making medieval style dresses for 4 granddaughters and got panicky until I found you on KZbin. Thank you for such a clear and concise lesson on this technique. I’m no longer afraid! God Bless!

Thank you for watching. Sewing is all about practice. It’s impossible to sew anything perfectly without practice and learning to control your machine and fabric and not letting it control you! Always test on scraps with anything you’re unsure of. Those you can just toss away instead of unpicking your project and possible damaging your fabric. BUT if you have to unpick, just take a deep breath and speak nicely to your project 😄. Let me know if there’s anything else you need tips on. Cheers

Mam I loved your video. Very easy to understand.i am making chair cusions ,want to make a spaghetti ties but its a canvas fabric I could not turn in side out even w/ a loop turner( because of the thickness of fabric. )Can you please help me on this problem?
@NotchesSewing2 жыл бұрын
Hi Verona, it would be almost impossible to make skinny ties from canvas. You are better to cut the fabric 4x the final width you want and press into long strips and topstitch on each side. Press in half first to make crease, then turn the side edges in to meet in the centre and then match the folded edges.
@pennsygal59539 ай бұрын
Does cutting on the bias alone keep the satin from freying so horribly? That's actually the part I am struggling with the most
@NotchesSewing9 ай бұрын
the edge may fray a bit but there won’t be long strands of threads coming away from a bias cut edge. Make sure you have a good amount of seam if you are making straps from fabric that frays a lot.

I cannot understand why your seam on the 1/8th strap was so wide. You did not trim it down, and that wide seam did not bunch up when you turned the strap right side out - unless you trimmed it and did not show that. Would appreciate an explanation of this. Thank you.
@NotchesSewing Жыл бұрын
Hi Mary, you leave a larger seam so that it “ fills” in the inside of the strap giving it some thickness. It creates a “rounder” strap. Because the fabric is cut along the bias, the fabric stretches a bit and becomes a bit narrower inside . The larger the seam, the denser the strap. You need to test different size straps and seams with your fabric to achieve the look that you want.. You don’t want to leave a tiny seam as it will not be strong and can fray easily.
@abrogard1428 ай бұрын
Jesus. Didn't even cut down the seam allowance ! all that fabric went inside ! unbelievable. I'll have to try it.
@NotchesSewing8 ай бұрын
Shouldn’t be a problem with softer fabrics to have full seam allowance inside. I do not like trimming seam allowance as it weakens strap. If it rips and frays, there isn’t a nice way to repair……..

I have a fabric that frays a lot so do I finish my edges or do I still just do a straight stich then flip it??
@NotchesSewing2 жыл бұрын
it's really something you'll have to test on a small scrap. Depending on width of your serger/overlocker stitch, you can try finishing edges after the straight stitch. Maybe even use a bit of fray stop before turning? IF the fabric is ok when sewing and turning, it really shouldn't fray on the inside as there isn't stress to the seams unless it is a stretch fabric.

On the last one could we trim off most of the seam allowance for less bulk or does that edge give the strap more form?
@NotchesSewing2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t trim to give it more strength and body. If there is too little seam inside, it will fray more easily and will be hard to fix. Always make a couple from scrap to see what look you like best. Thanks for watching.

This is the best and most thoughtfully described tutorial on using a loop turner. I have not been able to turn my loops successfully yet but this has been really helpful. What advice do you have for non-slippery fabrics? I made a top with a loop button enclosure out of heavy cotton/linen and couldn't turn out the 12cm loop so I just left it un turned out. Do you have any tips for success?
@NotchesSewing2 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome! Heavy fabrics is really hard to turn . Can you make loops out of a lightweight contrast or matching fabric? It will look like a feature on the blouse. Otherwise you can fold your fabric like a thin binding and edgestitch to make the loops. Fold so that it is a point on the end and tack across. Please check out some of my other tutorials. Cheers!
