I assume that the DUT is on the table. There is a rotating or moving magnetic field under the table which induces magnetic field across the copper wires. Or he place a copper coil at the bottom of the table with an ac voltage input. The device under test on the table acts as a secondary wiring of a transformer.

If you use AC, Take out the diode. Or put the capacitor between diode's anode and another end of coil. But the big problem, You should show all of components such as the primary coil.

A single diode does not make a DC current, it just lets the current to flow in one direction, but this one can still be low and high and low and high...whatever low and high levels are (and they don't have to be always the same value). If you try to measure it with DC mode, the value will constantly change and you won't be able to get a measure. In AC mode you will obtain a "average" voltage due to the electronic of the multimeter. Now, this does not mean the video is sincere... That was just to answer your question ;-)

Yes, because the signal is NOT a stable DC signal with just one diode. Using AC mode gives a more stable reading.... of the EMF ;-)

Yup the guy is generating an AC electrical field and is being induced by the windings he made on what is supposed to be a "solar panel" . This is why the meter is set to measure an AC voltage . You're seeing an induced AC voltage of 12.1 vac . You are not seeing the primary transformer he is using to create the electrical field .
