Welcome to Simply Cooking With Shawn! In today’s video I will be preparing Southern Style Red Rice and Sausage. This recipe is enough to feed 25 - 30 people and is a great compliment to a family BBQ or get together for various occasions. See ingredients and directions below.

Ingredients
8 Cups Parboiled Rice
8 Links Smoked Sausage
1 Large Green Pepper
1 Medium Onion
1 28 oz. Can Diced Tomatoes
1 46 oz. Bottle Tomato Juice
1/3 Cup Cooking Oil
1/3 Cup Sugar (add more or less to taste)
Onion Powder to Taste (Optional)
Garlic Powder to Taste - I omitted it from this recipe
Salt (optional to taste)
Add oil to large pot (8 quart or larger) with heat set to medium high. Once heated add chopped green peppers and onions. Cook about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add chopped sausages and cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add all remaining ingredients except rice, and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Once the pot begins to boil, wash rice, drain the water off and add to the pot. Stir to get all contents of the pot throughly mixed together. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally, and taste the liquid to ensure it’s seasoned to your liking. Add seasonings to desired taste is achieved. Stirring constantly, boil until most of the liquid is absorbed. Once absorbed, transfer contents of pot to a large baking pan, cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes in a 400 degree oven. Remove after 30 minutes and stir throughly. Rice should be perfect. If not, return to oven until desired doneness is reached.

I tried this today for Sunday dinner, I used beef smoked sausages. I didn’t put it in the oven. However, my husband and I enjoyed it. Very good recipe, I recommend others to try it.

Hello Shawn. Thank you for sharing your recipe for red rice. When I was little my uncle's wife my late Aunt Cynthia whom we all affectionately called "Auntie Cheryl" made red rice and fried fish every Friday for dinner and it is one of my most memorable recipes from her. Over the years I've tried to recreate her dish from memory and always had trouble with it. Your recipe uses smoked sausages but my aunt used bacon in hers. Your rice looks beautiful and I'm definitely going to give your recipe a try. Again thank you so much for sharing.

Hi Imari. Our Mom, Aunties and Grandmas really knew how to put a good pot together. My mom used to use fatback and sausage in hers. It was soooo good. I’ll share a funny story. When my brother and I were younger (during the 80’s) my mom made a pot, and after dinner there was just a little bit left, not quite enough for both of us to get another round, but we both wanted it. We started fighting over who would get the leftovers and fell onto the kitchen wall and made a huge hole in it (my parents had paneled walls back then). We just knew our dad was going to get us really good as we were taught not to fight one another. My mom’s rice was just that good. Well our dad let us off the hook that one time, because he was a believer in having us get a belly full at each meal. He repaneled the entire wall instead. Thank God for mercy because he let us off the hook.😂😂

@@simplycookingwithshawn Thank goodness lol. Your dad probably also knew how good your mother's rice was and probably wanted to stay in her good graces lol. I know that fatback added extra flavor. I haven't cooked with it in years as it's getting harder to find in my local markets. Great story and thank you for sharing. 🙂

Hey Shawn, just came from watching Teens channel. I thought I would drag my tongue👅all the way over here to get that recipe for Red Rice🍲😂😂. Well no disappointment here😋! I can see why Tee demands her own pan, I would too😂.Now didn't I see some potato salad on that dinner plate🍛🤔? I'm pretty sure I did😂😂. By the way, my apologies for missing your first live. I've been rubbing my eyes(Is that Shawn?😵) and kicking myself 🤦. You did great(please tell Tee, I really enjoyed it, I forgot to mention it)! I'm also glad everything is okay with the family. Here's my question: Where's the potato salad😂? Hey Ms Shawn. I have one Question. Can I use Minute rice or Uncle Ben's Rice in this recipe? Can do I have to wash the Minute Rice as well before putting in the pot?

Either rice you use, I’d encourage washing it first. In regards to Uncle Bens, I have used the brown rice in this brand but not for red rice. I would suggest you use any brand parboiled white rice for this recipe. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

The sugar is to cut the acidity in that big batch your not getting much of a carb increase at all just think 1 tablespoons shared by 25 people. Not much at all.

What kind of Rice did you use in this recipe? Minute maid rice ,Uncle Ben's, or Regular rice?

Hi Tina. I used parboiled rice. I usually get it from Walmart or Aldi. Store brand is what I purchase.

BEAUTIFUL VIDEO, THE RED RICE LOOKS DELICIOUS. I COOK THIS DISH ALL THE TIME BUT I DO NOT PUT IT INTO THE OVEN. I USE LESS LIQUID AND SIMMER ON LOW UNTIL DONE. I WOULD LOVE TO SUBSCRIBE TO UR CHANNEL BUT THE MUSIC WAS OVERBEARING. THX FOR SHARING.

Hi Meka, yes you may use Uncle Ben’s, that brand is actually parboiled rice, so it should work perfectly. Please let me know if you have further questions.

Adding sugar cuts down on the acidity and tartness of the tomatoes and tomato juice. It is optional however, as some may decide not to add it.
