Great video as always. Another thing i havent seen much being talked about when it come to house music production is drum fills or fills in general, i had to reference a lot in order to get it down well and im still learning obviously. Id like to see a video dedicated to fills if possible "when, why, how" that kind of stuff. I was shocked how such a small thing can bring the production together so well and take you one step further on sounding like the "pros".
@Bthelick

It's a great question, and not the first time it's been asked. I'm still working on how to teach it. being a rock guy originally (and I can play drums a lil too) I have a bunch of go-to fills and they all have silly names like "put-it-in-a-hat---box---" or "flats---in---Dagenham" 🤣🤣 but I kinda just use them instinctively and haven't yet worked out a formula or reliable way to convey it. We'll get there 👊

If you're in Bitwig, you can build this same functionality very easily by putting an Arpeggiator and a Tool after your sound source. Put a Bitwig envelope modulator on the Volume knob in Tool. Use the Arpeggiator to control which steps trigger the stutter. Likewise add filters before Tool with their own envelopes as needed. The Bitwig Arpeggiator is set by factory default to obey Bitwig's global swing. You can toggle that feature off if needed. All these devices can be wrapped in a container, with control macros, save it for later use, and you're off to the races.

And in Ableton, you can do it with the builtin "Auto Pan" effect! I think most DAWs out there nowadays, already natively include the necessary tools to do a volume LFO effect. Just the same, I appreciate that Bthelick focused on freely available VST plugins, which mean the tutorial is more universally applicable independent of the DAW you're using.

There are about five ways to do most of these tricks with 20-year-old stock effects in FL Studio too, but additional plugins can speed up the process and tend to be more visually appealing too.

Quite a few producers used to call it the 'Age of Love effect' until "trancegate" became the shorthand. It's interesting that it's come back in vogue, but even more interesting is the evolution of these gated/tremelo effects into complex patterns that change their speed/timing. I hadn't even thought about the issues with swing before, so this video was quite enlightening.

When making a swung drum pattern, I normally only swing the hi hats. What elements in your drums do you recommend swinging to officially classify it as a "swung groove" which therefore should match up with other swung instruments (not a straight stutter for example)?
@Bthelick
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
It's nuanced answer, but in general , my advice to newcomers is keep it locked together, swing should be matched everywhere. It's totally possible to mix and match for deliberate 'awkwardness' but you have to have a feel for dance and be able to dance before that becomes intuitive.

Don't suppose you've worked out how the French artists like SebastiAn and Mr.Oizo do their sample chopping technique ? lol. It's something i've always wanted to work out and dabble with but never get time to. I've seen excellent reproductions done but they simply cut and paste the audio. But if you listen to alot of their work in detail, you can hear there is a gating technique being used where samples of their choice will gate everything or some things when triggered. As for the fact that their wild sample chops still present something melodic in nature - i think thats simply a case of using pre made midi melodies then tuning samples to that melody. I was starting to suspect it was a tracker being used, or even a specific software that was made on an old software platform (name not coming to my mind right now). Whatever it is, their whole camp at Ed Banger records have been given the technique, and even Justice use it. It's not quite the same technique as say Aphex Twin or Todd Edwards, although they were the inspiration.

@@Bthelick I dread to give anyone more work on my behalf, i will look forward to your planned French video regardless. But if you do ever delve into it, i bookmarked this track as a more obvious example and it's slower : kzbin.info/www/bejne/boHXinWsqrqMmcU It's actually difficult to hear everything going on, because it's so fast and busy. You can hear that there are lots of layers of samples cutting each other out, and the lengths that each snippet is played changes. Sometimes a sample loop is chopped into snippets and reorganised, sometimes the loop is played normally but brought in and out according to their chosen gating structure. So it's as if a premade midi melody or rhythm is used and drives the playing of the samples. One thing that is constant amongst all those French artists using this technique, is that the kick and snare are the important anchors which the majority of the time will silence all other sounds playing. Slowing their tracks right down is much more revealing, but the technique still eludes me lol. The overall sonics is more straight forward as they distort and compress it to death. Alot of the 'breathing' as the samples chop and change is due to heavy mixbus compression. But anyway, this is something i already decided i am happy to surrender on ever achieving 😂 Thanks for the response B !
