We do a lot of air filter upsales, removing K&N filters and installing the OEM filter in later year Ram 6.7's. Oiled filters and MAF sensors do not mix, causes air density calculation errors and trucks to have DTC's for EGR, DPF Regen frequency, and other drivability issues. That and the Cummins has a habit of literally sucking the oil out of the filters. Every truck I've worked on that has a K&N filter has dust inside the CLEAN side of the air box. I've already had to replace a few engines due to dust-out from a K&N filters.
@cosmic72347 ай бұрын
That’s just American car problems. Oiled filters won’t cause “errors”. The kits they come in typically have a larger rigid pipe to the throttle body and a larger filter so it can flow more. American cars are made like shit so that’s probably causing the ECU to freak out. Not really the CAIs problem. I got an AEM filter in my car and the ECU adapted just fine. Obviously no real power increase but it works, it’s reusable, and you get that sweet ass noise
@CJ-jo6do7 ай бұрын
@@cosmic7234 The number of vehicles I've worked on for this issue and the service bulletins that talk about this says otherwise. Oiled filters have a tendency to coat the MAF sensor element(s) with oil, sometimes dust as well, making them read incorrect (showing lower than actual air volume). And when the engine computer is looking at the MAF sensor for EGR operation, air density calculations for fueling and turbo operation, and air density calculations for determining soot load in the DPF, problems start to occur. This is coming from a full time diesel tech. I deal with this like this on a daily basis.

@@CJ-jo6do cleaning some oil off the MAF is a different issue then engines failing and trying to blame it on some cotton. Is that an actual issue? Yes, that’s a frustrating issue with many wet filters. You’re right there, and I didn’t fairly consider that complaint. However beyond that. When excess oil is sucked into the intake and after it’s been cleaned from the MAF/MAP, an aftermarket filter won’t catastrophically damage an engine. neither will cause such a large volume of dust to be sucked into the cylinders that it kills an engine. Aftermarket filters are marginally less effective than stock paper ones. If you’re in a dust bowl and surrounded by incredibly fine particles of dust sure but I don’t think you’d live long enough to be burdened by it cause you’ll die from Silicosis. But aftermarket filters and intakes aren’t usually installed on company work trucks or moon rovers, only personal vehicles. People even run ITBs just fine all the time (although these are on actually good cars) and drive em on the road. The engines are dying cause it’s a Dodge and American cars are just a joke. The service bulletin is trying to save face. Edit: when I say people run ITBs all the time, I mean there are a few who run them all the time as their daily. Enough for it to be statistically significant that even without a filter and the engine just sucking in whatever, it doesn’t kill them. It’s mainly a thing people do to their JDM cars (I’ve never seen ITBs on a German or modern USDM yet), and of course JDM cars are just excellent. Basically, my point is the tiny bit extra of fine dust that’ll pass through aftermarket high flow filters is insignificant and the reason you’re replacing engines on RAM trucks probably has something to do with it being a Dodge.

Titanium heat wrap and silicone spray are a god sent if you have a cold air intake that travels over a header, and 2z KEEP THE FACTORY PLASTIC AIR BOX OVER YOUR AIR INTAKE. your air intake will pull air from the fender or ambient air in general. If the box isn’t there it isn’t keeping the degrees 10 or lower so it instead pulls from your engine which is WAY hotter than it needs to be. Heat wraps, and a good filter you oil every 15k miles is a must if you want all the performance you can get guys. Hope this helps.

Yes and they do NOT sound good in any way whatsoever and they really sound like 💩. If they take the air filter out or install some cold air kit, cut the AC belt off, power steering off, gut the car, lower it, put rims on it, and lastly put some kind of Fart exhaust on there they now have a 20 second race car that magically goes 10 seconds in their mind🤯🙄🤣. I don't care what 4 cylinder it is if someone puts an aftermarket exhaust on there and does whatever they want is still sounds like a fart machine as they were never built for power or intended for power they were merely designed and built as economy gas saving throwaway engines and cars. As for the six cylinders they sound like Hoover vacuum cleaners.

I don't know if the latest K&N air filters do a better job, but about 10 years ago, they might have breathed better than stock, but they didn't filter nearly as well. I attended a local offroad long weekend trip, where a bunch of trucks rode in convoy on some extremely dusty roads for about 3 hours and about 50 miles. The dust mid and rearwards in the convoy was absolutely terrible (my offroader doesn't have AC and it was hot). 3 of the guys had literally just finished rebuilding their engines, and this was their maiden voyage. ½way through the trip, some of the guys noticed they were burning quite a bit of oil. 2 of the machines burning oil were fresh rebuilds. Later on the weekend we did a water crossing and pretty much everyone checked their air filters to see if water got in. To our surprise, about 6 of them had huge amounts of dust in their intakes, and that was after the air filter. What was consistent was every one full of dust, was running a high flow air filter. Most of these were K&N high flow filters. The trucks with the cleanest intakes were running thick, expensive air filters. Almost all were either OEM or Wix filters. Luckily, on that weekend I had a stock air filter installed. I did have a K&N but had been having trouble with vapor lock because it didn't get cold air like the stock intake and filter did. Ever since that long weekend, I've only run K&N's on street cars that don't see dirt roads.

This. Nobody talks about how there is a clear layer of fine dust on the inside of their intake because of the screen door air "filter". There are oil bath filters, We use one on our 1 cylinder diesel generator. Thing is probably 40-50 years old, but runs like a champ. I'm guessing these oiled K&N filters take from that idea, but oil in the intake of gas engines can cause issues with octane. I noticed a detrimental effect of using 87 with some 2-stroke engines, like preignition when running for extended periods. Switching to 89 or even 92 gave much better performance with 50:1. I don't need 5-10 extra HP for less filtration, and more maintenance. So there are not many reasons to go for a K&N as a daily driver filter.

another issue on gasoline engines is the air filter pressure drop is what scavenges the crankcase at wide open throttle so when you change to an aftermarket filter without precise CFM@Pressure drop rating for example 500CFM@1.5"Hg you are also changing the crankcase evacuation and this leads to oil blowing out of the engine and its often why everybody blames their truck engines for having awful PCV systems when they in fact are causing the oil to blow out of the engine by changing the filter and neglecting to measure and configure their crankcase pressure properly

"Cold air" mods aside, one other tip id like to add is i highly recommended using the precharge filter bags they sell for super fine particulants, especially if you operate off road or in generally dusty conditions like in the american southwest. Id rather spend a lil extra money on filters than prematurely wearing my engine. Granted it dont mean much to my 30yo engine who was neglected by seven previous owners. First day i had it i saw the filter was caked solid with granite dust from the Colorado Rockies. Intake had a film of dust and oil from the breather spitting.
