Yes you can use it for long time

this can be used that way, but warning, with no amplification before the final mosfet (like in this design)the output raise slowly folowing the voltage curve of the mosfet. this mean that your fan will ramp up and down depanding on temperature, but the fan has a min voltage underwish it doesn't turn, and in some fans, long term usage at those unsufficient voltage, can burn the fan out, and short circuit it, so before using it, check that the fan is a dumb one and turn even with only 2 or 3 volts. overwise use a more advanced system with actual amp in it (cost very little but you have to buy it and wire it correctly, (those are the spider ones)), so that is behave like a on off switch, or simply run a 24V fan at 12V like every one else(low noice and good enought airflow if you take large enought fan)
