I've just recently picked up my ocarina again after years of not playing it and wanted to learn vibrato. Came across this video and when you spoke about the bouncy ball analogy it was like a light bulb went on in my head and everything clicked. Suddenly I'm able to do decent sounding vibrato. Wonderful! Time to practice a bunch and get this perfect. :)

Hi Gina! How does you vibrato feel different on the ocarina vs the classical flute? I have an ocarina too but I haven't messed with it much:)

I believe you are confusing vibrato with tremolo. Vibrato is a quick/slow fluctuation of pitch intonation to produce a musical effect. Tremolo is a quick/slow accent of a pitch to produce a musical effect. Imagine a vibrato being played on the violin by moving the finger on a pitch repeatedly. Now, tremolo is produced when the bow trembles (bowing repetitively) on the pitch. So, "ha, ha, ha" is more like tremolo. Vibrato on wind instruments can be produced by regulating the jaw/embouchure at a given repetitive speed.

Ocarinas vary in pitch with changing breath pressure, pretty substantially at that (as much as a half step above or below the fingered note), so this method would definitely achieve the changing pitch characteristic of vibrato.

This is a big debate between musicians and technicians all the time. And that's between the definitions of tremolo and vibrato vary depending on the subject matter. Tremolo is the half step down and up the played note to add pizzazz between notes. Chopin Nocturne is perfect example of tremolo. However vibrato is changing the accent on 1 particular note. Like vocals it do etc. But while the definition of tremolo and vibrato are effectively interchangeable. This is what is meant and understood by many musicians as vibrato

@@LordViran I suggest to watch "How to Produce Vibrato - OcTalk (Ocarina Tutorial) David Erick Ramos - Ocarina" as he says not to do it like what is on this video and that it is something which develops naturally and best not done be interrupting the breath. David Erick Ramos says it naturally happens if one is abdominally breathing and holding steady a breath out.

Finally getting around to learning ocarina because I kept putting it off in favor of flute. I really didn't think that the two instruments would be this similar!

Gina can you please share when is too early to learn vibrato? If you can blow and play correctly with good intonation, isnt that a good time?Also, for anyone to answer, isnt vibrato a lot easier to produce on an ocarina than say on a violin or a flute? Hope you can respond Gina or anyone else.

For future readers: She literally states in the video when there is a good time to learn it. One minute in. She says to learn it after you know the notes by memory, you need to know all the fingering & you need to be able to produce a steady sound before you start vibrato. As of typing this comment I am not at the required level to start this so I need to go back and practice more on the previous fundamentals.

So I just recently got a Tenor Ocarina in C from STL. For the most part the tuning seems accurate, but is it supposed to be really hard to play low notes? To get them in tune I have to restrict my air flow insane amounts to get my low C to be in tune. Going lower is even harder 😅

Interesting how different the techniques are from a teacher to another. Some with the diaphragm, others with the throat, other with natural relax blowing, others even with the mouth...
@leif10754 жыл бұрын
Are any of them contradictory??
@ocarinamom29154 жыл бұрын
@@leif1075 not sure I get what you mean here... what I was pointing is that it’s strange how many professional say “here is how you should do a vibrato”, but the techniques are totally different. So yes they are in contradiction one with the others. In the end we might just choose, but some people will keep asking themselves if they do it right or are taking habits that are not the best choice to practice. Don’t know if that makes sense for others than me ! 😅

Crochet Lady you are very right! In my experience currently being a Music Education major with my primary instrument being the saxophone, there is a lot of different ways that professionals approach technique... Especially vibrato! With that being said, there is not necessarily a singular wrong option with the all the different forms you had mentioned! For example, I was taught for years on the saxophone to use more or less my jaw for vibrato in middle/high school. But now that I am studying professionally, I have learned that even though that form is not wrong, it does have it’s flaws! I have now started using what us saxophonists call ‘voicing’ to help aid my vibrato and be able to control it with more ease. So the moral of my story is that when it comes to technique like vibrato, there is not necessarily an absolutely wrong way to do it, but to be able to learn and properly use different forms/styles of vibrato, it adds to your arsenal of musical expression vocabulary! I hope this helps either you or Leif in any way!

Leif you should look at the comment I just posted agreeing with Crochet Lady... Maybe it will help hearing it with different words? 😁

@@eddiestuczynski thanks for your input (and to confirm I’m not too crazy or alone in the world haha) ! I used to play saxophone too, but not at your level, for sure ! And I also remember we were explained how to do a vibrato using jaws and-or diaphragm (or was this just in my head, not sure, it has been a while ! I tend to be my own teacher on many points so I’m confused with what came from the teachers haha). That is another interesting point to mention : maybe some vibrato techniques are less suitable with some instruments than others ? I should have a try just to see... but of course I’m not the best to confirm anything, I’m too far from a professional level ! You’d clearly be in a better position to give your opinion :)

That doesn't sound like the vibrato in singing, guitar, violin or cello ... in all of those cases while the technique might be different it's always varying the pitch around the exact tone. While the one demonstrated on the ocarina is more like an interrupt or modulation of the breath - it sounds different.
