I've always wanted to craft myself an ocarina for so long, my first few attempts haven't given me the results I hoped for. But after watching this video, I think I have an idea what I can do different.

I hope it will work this time! Honestly I thought this one was going to fail too, it helps to test the blow-hole by taping the two sides together.

The toothbrush was an interesting idea I never thought of doing for smaller projects. Awesome end result! I definitely want to give this a try now.

Thanks mate! I hope it works out for you. Especially the voicing hole is hard to get right (which you don't really see in this video) but once it works it's magic!

@@WoodCat How did you know where to put the tone holes?
@WoodCat3 жыл бұрын
I held the pieces together and then held it as I would play it, then made the holes where my fingers sat naturally.

@@WoodCat The voicing hole is what ruined my day today. lol Spent about five hours making two different back pieces. No luck yet. I'll get it though!
@WoodCat3 жыл бұрын
@@noiamhippyman Yeah I also feel I just was very lucky, although I tried it 6 times before it worked. It also helps to watch videos of people making it with clay to understand the anatomy better.

Ciao!

Gotta ask - do you drill all holes the same size then just tweak them based on the pitch of each note? And how did you 'set' the pitch of the blowhole or do you just use whatever note it is and build from there? Great video, cool looking wood

Have you ever tried making xylophones or marimbas there huge projects to undertake but so worth it in the end i just finished my second marimba and its a huge learning process but its so rewarding and by the end you have a instrument you can play for years and tune too.

man awesome job i want to try it out too does it have to be a tone wood for the chamber?
@WoodCat3 жыл бұрын
I actually don’t think it’s necessary to use a tonewood. I however wouldn’t try something like pine or oak though.
@lturnbullify3 жыл бұрын
@@WoodCat yeah makes sense ive got some padauk kicking around i'll try combining that with a light coloured wood too maybe ash or maple.

@@lturnbullify Cool! Don't give up when you don't get it right at first, it needs a lot of tweaking, small tweaks can make a big difference. One way to test the voicing hole is to tape the two halves together.

Learn to use the depth stop on your pillar drill - every hole would then be the same depth, requiring a lot less clean-up work.
