I cut up plastic bottles as my plastic backing, such as smart water bottles or 2 liter bottles. The plastic already has a curve to it and If I need a taller pole I will just overlap the the plastic putting the lower plastic over top of the upper plastic so the water doesn't drip out the back. I have a very difficult time finding suitable plastic sheets here in the U.S. and it's recycling 😊 One other thing I love is, I have a hand drill that I use an attachable tin snips to cut my wire, makes the processes much faster and much less painful 😊

@@GoodGrowing I’m currently working in a prototype for moss poles that are cool shapes (think squiggly poles, circular “wreath” like poles etc.). I’m still working out the logistics of water distribution throughout the pole, but it’s looking like my latest idea might just work! Moss poles are too much fun 😂

Thank you Emma for the great video, as always! This is one of the most helpful moss pole video I’ve watched (and I’ve watched a lot in the past couple weeks to prep for my first moss pole). I really appreciate that this video answered a question that I had but couldn’t find answers for: since people tend to need to water moss pole more often than they do substrate, how do I keep moss pole moist while not overwatering my substrate? The orchid bark filling bottom is super enlightening and I’ll do that to keep it well draining!
@GoodGrowing

I also water using a cup with tiny holes placed on top of the pole and that keeps the pole moist without watering the soil

Made a privacy greenhouse box with one, It refracts the light into rainbows and you cant tell whats inside perfectly by looking at it. Looks great. Also has a solid white sheet in every TV, free 70" white background perfect for a photo staging

Hello, thank you for sharing this video, I have been researching many other videos on these "D" shaped moss poles, but I'm very impressed by you using clear plastic rather than opaque white. I'll be going to the store for the clear plastic. My next question is? The cost of this wire mesh, as I'm trying to keep the cost down, being I'm a senior citizen on a fixed income. If you have any suggestions plz feel free to advise me, keep making your videos, I love learning new things especially for the growth of my plants, ❤❤❤

I don’t remember the wire mesh being particularly expensive but you get A LOT of it on a roll, so might be worth banding with some fellow plant parents and going in on some together

I like to use terracotta pots in our plants. I think they look much better and keep plants healthier. Does anyone have ideas how to use these D-shaped poles in terracotta pots?
@louisedreisig6166
@louisedreisig6166 Жыл бұрын
That actually looks doable! 😄 Is it worth making these if you know you won't be able to keep them super moist? I don't have a cabinet and it gets pretty dry in summer here in Madrid, so I just know it's not realistic. I'm wondering if they're still better for the plant than coir poles if they're not kept consistently moist.
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing Жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s actually really easy to make. And keeping them moist isn’t that bad here in the UK I put a plastic cup with holes on the top of the pole and fill that with water every few days. The poles don’t need to stay super wet and as long as they don’t fully dry out tooooo often it should be fine. With the plastic back the moisture stays pretty well and the insides of the poles hold water better

@traceyclark2754
@traceyclark2754 Жыл бұрын
Hobbies intersecting here: rolls of cake collar acetate will work for smaller poles. It tends to be 125-150 microns. It comes in different widths and the continuous length makes it easy to customize with less waste.

My bestie and I made this last time she stayed the night! I think the plastic sheet I got is a little weak so I had to support with stakes. Do you ever get mold on your moss? I’ve been spritzing with hydrogen peroxide when I notice it which seems to be working. I think I got mold because for some reason I thought it’d be a good idea to use mosquito bit water 🙄 lol.
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing Жыл бұрын
Omg best sleepover activity! And yeah some plastics are a bit too thin but as long as the stakes work to help hold it up, you’re golden! I’ve not had any issues with mould on my moss and I’ve used mosquito bit water on them before 🤷🏻‍♀️ so not too sure what’s going on there. But as long as the hydrogen peroxide is working you should be fine

Do you put moss pole with Pons? Never seen one wonder if anyone has?
@SuperUsername147
@SuperUsername147 Жыл бұрын
Do you mean use a moss pole in pon or use pon in a moss pole? I use poles in all my semi hydro set ups. No different than with soil. As far as using pon in a moss pole, do not recommend. It’s too heavy and makes a mess.
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing Жыл бұрын
Same as what the other person said. I have plants in pon with moss poles just fine, just make sure the moss doesn’t go down into the water reservoir as you risk it getting mouldy. I wouldn’t put pon in the pole part though
@AnonymousAmyMakes
@AnonymousAmyMakes 8 ай бұрын
One other thing...I find that with the d shaped poles, the entire pot seems to tip backwards because of the weight of the moss being on one side of the pot. What are some ways I could prevent this other than putting my pot in a big pot filled with river rocks 😂
