How to Make the Harley Quinn Bat from Suicide Squad

I started by turning a Maple baseball bat on my lathe. Once I was happy with the shape, I cut out a tape stencil on my X-Carve CNC router. After masking it off, I sprayed the tape with spray lacquer to prevent the paint from bleeding. 3 light coats of Rustoleum Apple Red and then dirtied up the edges with some thinned out black model paint. The same technique was used for the diamond detail in the center using Apple Red, Brilliant Blue, Colonial Red and Gloss Black. Once the paint was dry, I coated the entire bat with satin spray lacquer to seal it up.
The letters were the hardest part of the entire build. I didn't just want the size of the text to be accurate, I also wanted them to be the same words. After much searching, I found out the words written on the bat. I printed them off for reference and wrote them on the bat using black, red and blue Sharpies.

My suggestion is to keep to this style. There are plenty of "teachers" out there. You are a member of the rare - here's what I made. Or to put it another way; if wood workers were to make videos in the "turner" mode, they would include the harvest, cutting, drying/seasoning, selecting, measuring, re-sawing and cutting into the process of building of a wooden cube. So clear lacquer will prevent the sharpies from bleeding when writing the text, correct?

Yes, it won't be able to bleed into the wood. And you can put a coat over the sharpie to lock it in too. But be careful; too heavy of a coat and it could bleed the sharpie.

That look fantastic!! To really seal in that paint and give it a gloss finish look I would recommend coating the bat in wax (Bees wax is good) while spinning it on the lathe

details are in the description. I can't comment on finishes I've never used but spray lacquer is cheap and that's what I used. Stencil, red paint, dirty up the letters, remove the stencil, spray lacquer, sharpie, LIGHT COATS of spray lacquer. Too much lacquer at one time will cause the sharpies to bleed. trust me..
