Yep. I have about 9 yards of a lovely midweight wool in a cobalt blue that I bought a good 4 years ago. The specific idea was to make a very full and swishy cloak with lined hood. It's been very patiently waiting for me and I have a huge desire to make it up Right Now for a fancy dress award ceremony tomorrow. I also have to finish the top I intend to wear (I guess I should do that first) so I have an actual outfit to wear. Choices and decisions. Drat!

I made myself a camel coloured hip length cape about 6 months ago. Hip length works better for me as a wheelchair user. It has a very large hood, with a faux fur trim (and as pretty as it is, I’m never working with that stuff again! What a nightmare). It’s lined with a lovely dark mulberry/ eggplant colour- though I cheaped out and went for very inexpensive poly lining, which I do regret. It’s pretty, but it was awful to work with, and given that it doesn’t get very cold where I am, a cotton or linen lining would have been a much better decision. The cape is so warm that I’m lucky to be able to wear it maybe one or two days a year. I might go back in at some point and replace the lining, but not yet- too many projects on my list that would get a lot more wear than my cape, as pretty as it is.

I have an antique, military, ankle length, super heavy, wool cloak, without a hood. I've used a wool shawl in place of it. But your video makes me want to make something lighter weight. Fabric quality means everything to me, in the joy it gives when wearing a garment. I'd literally wear a paper bag if made from linen or any natural fiber. Pity this turned out to be polyester. For me the finished piece loses its luster. Love your courage of just diving in!

I must be lazy. I made my cloak by taking a piece of fabric ( 60"x 60"), facing the entire square with a lining, sewed a hem the entire way around, basted 3 lines of gathering stitches on the top end to form the collar and added my hood. The hood was a square of fabric ( 16" x 16"), that I faced with my lining material, folded in half and stitched up one side, hemed and sewed 3 lines of basting to gather and then sewed to cloak collar. It took me 3 hours from start to finish and I have made 3 for friends.

I'm thinking of making a cloak for myself and that's the way I want to do it except for lining and gathering xD I mean I'm going to just fold a blanket in half after cutting a piece for a hood, cut the neckline and front open, sew the hood and attach few buttons. Your cloak is lovely. I used to do seams by hand as you did here, but I'm unable to do that, now. My new favorite way to avoid unraveling edges on seams is to use a french seam method. I sew the garment with a thin seam (1/4 inch or so) with wrong sides together, then flip the garment to put right sides together, and make a larger seam that encases the raw edges. If the fabric is not unusually thick, it works very well. I enjoyed your video very much.

Really awesome cloak! :D *puts making a hobbit cloak on never-ending to-sew list* one day... one day...
@meamela98204 жыл бұрын
I hadn't thought of making a cloak in that way before. To use the neckline of existing patterns sound so much easier than the math I do every time, and would take away the struggle a perfect circle gives. As you say the neckline needs to be lower in the front and that also affects the length of the cloak. I have only made half circle cloaks, but I suppose making it in more panels maybe uses the fabric more economically (but the swoosh is maximal when working with circles). Concerning the hood and its size: if you want the hood to be warm, a smaller and thighter hood is better than a big hood. Big hoods look awesome, but thight ones are preferable when you want to shield yourself from the wind. I have made the mistake of thinking that "bigger is better" once: that hood is useless, unless it rains without it being windy. The slightest wind blows it off.

Fabric that is not what you bought is a problem that is showing up more and more on the sewing side of KZbin. I am hoping that there are enough of us that we can make capes and cloaks come back. My mother made mine back when I was about 15 or 16. I made one for my oldest a few years back, and her cat snagged it up pretty badly. I was able to repair much of it, but we decided to cover the odd pulled look around the hem with tatted leaves (and a hidden dragon or two). I love how your cape works for excellent coach potato-ing. Stay well!

Love how swooshy your cloak came out! Back in the day I made a leaf brooch from Sculpey, but the blog host died long ago & I never did repost it. Essentially I resized an image of the brooch so it would print the size I wanted my brooch, shaped the sculpey over that (so I had a guide for size & shape), and once fired painted it with translucent glass paint (basic stuff from the craft store). If I track down the pics I'll post them on IG & tag you. AlleyCatScratch has an image of it on their Clay Leaf Brooch page though.

Next time you try a hood, try a box with the seam down your center parted hair to a corner and down the center back to the neck. Shaping it into the neck with some tucks or gathers...it gives you more room and allows for a tassel at that corner. You get more room for your hair and can pull it down over your face a bit for warmth or rain protection.

I use rectangular cloaks. One is 2m to 1,5m and the other is 3m to 1,5m. You fold the fabric of the 3m cloak in half so that you have a double layer of wool. To close it, you can use a fible. Women would close it over the chest and men over the right shoulder.
@cheryldenkins15974 ай бұрын
Ive never heard of the bleach test for fiber content. You can take a snip and set it on fire. Poly melts, with a hard black bead. Wool smells like burning hair, and smolders, doesn't burn well. Cotton has a fine ash and smells more like burning paper. Don't remember silk, but the info is out there somewhere. Love the cloak. Mom made me one in blue crushed velvet about 50 years ago. I still wear it.
@juliecain63973 жыл бұрын
If you leave a slit in the front of the side gore seam at about elbow level, it leaves room for your arms to come through and in the wind, you can hold the front closed...especially if you add a fur muff to your ensemble. Perhaps a touch of same fur around hood at the face. Feel free to ignore me completely. You are doing great on your own.
