This is exactly what I am looking for. I’ve been mastering playing hymns by chords (left hand) since pandemic. I am not at the level I want myself to be, and recently got asked to play hymns for sacrament meeting this week. I don’t have much variety yet with my style. I just do 1-3-5. But I want to put more variations to it like what you’ve covered in this video. Thank you for sharing!

Interesting, and you are so correct that one’s attitude can affect the way we sing or play a hymn. That is why it is important to pray before we begin, and consecrate the hymn to the Lord.

Hey! I'm a Southern Baptist accompanist and the tips you shared in this video were great. I'm looking into starting a small one-hour course at a camp this summer that will try to teach students how to take hymns and turn them into good accompaniment for our congregational singing. Not enough musicians coming up in our churches know the value of learning how to play this style of worship music, and I thank you both for continuing to create videos such as this one. Thanks Stanley! Ultimately, what you choose for reharmonization depends on what kind of sound you want. As far as getting ideas, I had seen the 7th chord substituted in other songs and just tried it out here. Definitely some trial and error.

If you play everything in the hymnal, including the Christmas hymns, you need to be able to play in all keys.

Well if we’re talking about the current version of the LDS hymnal, there are a few keys that aren’t represented such as B Major, or G flat major. And the vast majority of hymns are in the same few keys. But absolutely learning all the keys will only help with piano and the hymns and is a great thing for any pianist to do!
