I have the "Sam Maloof Woodworker" book published 1983 and in it he talks at length about his finishes. He states that every piece he makes is finished with 2 finishes. The first finish as you say contains equal parts of boiled linseed oil, urethane varnish (he states "semi-gloss") and "raw" tung oil. The second and final finish he applies (usually days later) is made from equal parts of boiled linseed oil and raw tung oil but this time with no urethane and instead the addition of bees wax which he shreds into the mix whilst gently heating. He does not give the exact amount of bees wax because he adds it by hand until the solution has the consistency of "heavy cream" - he states that it is around "a couple of handfuls per gallon". He applies both the first and second finishes with rags and rubs them into the wood until his "hand gets hot". Thought you might find this interesting. Regards from the UK.

Thanks for the info as with anything his finish evolved over time. I believe the one I showed is what he was using when he passed. Yours is probably an earlier version. It is interesting and I am playing around with the version I taught here so I’m might try yours a bit to see what the difference is. If you watch my last video with the redwood box frame I do use a beeswax finish on top of the Maloof finish and it was beautiful. It’s not the one you have here but it’s an oil and bees wax finish too. Anyway I could talk about this stuff all day thanks for watching cheers.

Hey how did it end up with the tung oil varnish? Was going to make this but realized my pure tung oil has gone bad

Just to add on to Marie-Rama's comment: The retail version of Sam Maloof's Oil/Wax Finish contains: 50% Boiled Linseed Oil 48.5% Raw Tung Oil 0.75% Carnuba Wax 0.75% Bees Wax I've been using it myself for several years now and love it. I prefer to buy the Maloof branded cans because it cost more for me to buy all the separate ingredients to make it myself.

Does Sam Maloofs finish premixed give you a gloss finish. That’s what I’m trying to find. Thanks

How does Odie’s oil compare to this?

Omg the Monty python moment made this fantastic in my personal nerdy humor loving opinion but lol that is one of the best scenes ever besides "of course in french" and "the shrubberies" I'm sure you know exactly what I mean lol thanks for the video

Thanks for the video. To what grit and what succession does he sand up to before applying finish, between coats, and after finish? Thanks.
@MaysWoodworking4 жыл бұрын
The technique I was taught which works well on hardwoods is to sand to 400. Then use an 800 because if you missed anything with the 400 the 800 dust will make the scratches stand out so you sand to 400 but use 800 to make sure you are perfect. Then apply one coat and wait at least a day but longer is fine Mike Johnston who is the only guy who is officially allowed to make and sell Maloof furniture waits a week in between coats which is more then necessary. Then sand with 400 again and do another coat. Then wait a day again. This time use 0000 steel wool and one more coat then repeat with steel wool. I asked how many coats and he said until it’s good so in my experience 3 is minimum and about 4 to 6 is good. Then after final coat you can wax it if you want to buff it or it looks fine as is too. Hope that helps.

I prefer Simple Danish oil layer , 3 : 1) with 10% white spirit 2) with 5 % 3 ) pure .. than 3 thin layer liquid wax . 24 hours between each layer - a six days trip.. a lot of elbow for polish with old tee shirt.

How would that work on an acoustic instrument like a guitar or violin? Would it be too thick and impair tone and volume?
@Krunch2020 Жыл бұрын
Never use polyurethane on an instrument. Shellac or lacquer only.

Hi ya Mays; Want to stop that stuff running down the outside of the can? Use that screwdriver! Put the tip of the screwdriver in the groove where the top seals the can. Tilt the screwdriver so 1 corner of the tip is off the bottom of the groove. Hit the end of the screwdriver handle w/ the butt of your hand. Hit it hard enough the tip pokes a hole in the bottom of the groove. Now when you pour the contents hold the cup right up under the top. When you turn the can back up the excess will drip back into the can thru the hole. And when you put the lid on it seals the hole you made. I used to be a painter before I decided I'd rather make sawdust.

be sure that little hole is more on the inside edge of the can vs the outside our you'll end up with a dried up can of goo. (-: that is my experience anyway.

what about re coating ? just sand a bit and re apply ?
@MaysWoodworking4 жыл бұрын
Yes sand at about 400 and reapply. Do this for 3 to 4 coats but before the last coat use 0000 steel wool instead of sand paper.

Klean strip boiled linseed oil contains a cobalt additive and I don't believe Watco tung oil finish even contains any tung oil (I think its varnish and boiled linseed oil). I'm not sure about what Mr. Maloof would have used, but you are not using what you think you are! Thanks for sharing!

I would never mix oils with water based anything. I would stir the polyurethane prior to pouring any out. Heat gun is a great idea! I would not use this finish out doors in the weather.
@andrewjames30682 жыл бұрын
The so called ‘tung oil’ that you’re using contains hardly any tung oil.

You forgot the most important component of a Maloof finish: An ungodly amount of sanding
@greglongenecker17722 жыл бұрын
Tried this formula, and it’s no different than just using the polyurethane by it self. I couldn’t fine pure tongue oil though so maybe that’s why 🤔
