As someone who has been searching for the perfect 6 button fightpad for ages as well, this video speaks to my soul. Currently using the Xbox version of the 8bitdo M30 since it has extra shoulder buttons and is wired. It's almost perfect but it's just so tiny in my hands. If 8bitdo made a pro version of the M30 that was bigger and had handles and was chunkier, it'd be my dream controller.

One observation that I'd make is that having the six button layout on the face of the controller is cumbersome. You'll never actually hit all three punches for a super unless you change your grip or use a shoulder button as a macro. It would potentially be more efficient to have all of the face buttons moved to the underside of the grips, with the front of the controller featuring two directional pads and some macro buttons. Charge inputs and more complex motions could be executed so much more efficiently if the directional input can be shared between two thumbs and moving between directions could be done without the need to return to neutral in between.
@RushG18 күн бұрын
With 6 button layout I always have shoulders mapped to 3P and 3K. The purple of the face buttons is the access to all Lights, Mediums, Heavies on the front of the controller. I don't like using L1 and L2 for my standard moveset. In SF6 I would map them as Drive Impact and Drive Parry

For me, the dpads that are made of a single piece seem worse than if the directions were separated from each other (DualShock4 style). In reality, the dpad of the DS4 is a single piece but there is separation between the directions and it makes pressing them more precise (at least for me).
@RushG20 күн бұрын
@@NemessiS082 interesting, for me I prefer the singular piece dpad. It's where there's not enough resistance or too much where I have issues with my inputs. The PS1 controller though I remember being really good for fighters, dpad felt great

I agree that the button layout for these fightpads really should be the facebuttons and the L3 R3 buttons this point is good. I contest putting weights in the pad I feel the rumble motors add enough weight also i really like the rumble feel in my hands. Another point i agree on is the circular d pad, while i love the cross shaped (+) d-pad, the circular ones on the saturn/series x make hittin the electric more consistent. i really like the 8bitdo d-pads but they dont really last that long in my hands, the d-pad lasts about 3 months and the membranes about 8 months. i dont know if it counts but the flydigi vader 3 and vader 4 has 6 face buttons and although the d-pad placement was a little awckward at first i adjusted to it and it feels great for KBD, wavedash, dragonpunches, mvc2 shenanigans and tekken electrics. i recommend the vader 3 and 4.

My favorite pad is the G7 SE, the controller has the best cross shaped pad I used with 1000 Hz polling rate. Yes it's not a fightpad and it's Xbox styled, but I really love the feel of the buttons and I'm comfortable with that design. The other Gamesir controllers are good, however because most of them used micro switches instead of rubber membranes, I find them a bit less accurate for my liking.

My favorites for the most recent generation of consoles and PC are the Hori Fighting Commander like you showed off that I have for Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, the 8Bitdo M30 (they need to make these work on other consoles besides the Switch), the Razer Raion (excellent microswitch enabled d-pad), and the Retro-Bit Sega Saturn controller ,(they need to update this to work on newer consoles).
@BrassMountainLion17 күн бұрын
The PowerA Fusion Fightpad and thr Retro-bit Saturn Pro are my favorties, though neither is perfect. I vastly prefer shoulder buttons at a shallow angle for use as primary attack buttons and avoiding palm-filling handles since they make for sweaty hands. Fightpads without thumbsticks should have buttons in easy reach of the left thumb for switching the Dpad input to LS or RS more conveniently.
@KarmaDama21 күн бұрын
Agreed on all counts. The pad market has so few offerings and all of them seem massively flawed one way or the other. My 8bitdo m30 is great but is way too small and the shoulder buttons are slim and close to each other. Personally I just use a straight up Sega Saturn controller (the PS2 one to be precise) through an adapter. The only thing I'd really like is an extra 2 shoulder buttons but it's not the end of the world. Best d-pad around, replacement parts are cheap and plentiful and maintenance is easy, and the thing is built like a tank. Modern pads just all fall short in one aspect or another, and reliability is one of the biggest pitfalls that all of them, even the "premium" ones seem to fall into.

The Hori Octa is better than I thought, although the 6 button front confuses me more than it helps. I detransitioned from stick due to all arcade stores having been closed here, but the Hori came close to being comfortable compared to the likes of 8Bitdo M30 or Pro 2. What I don't understand is why my Octa model's analogue stick doesn't like SF shortcuts, like pressing a diagonal twice for DPs, while my other standard Xbox and Ps pads allow for shortcuts. I like to use the stick for instant divekicks, because the dpad is quite stiff. I'm looking forward to the 2025 Octa model and hope they'll add tactile or mechanical dpads and maybe a hall effect stick to keep them from deteriorating so fast. We don't have many options here in Germany, so I can't try the first one you've shown and have to stick to Hori, 8Bit, and Gamesir

Thanks for making this video because this is something that's frustrated me for years and continues to be aggravating. One of the other problems is that big-name manufacturers don't make as many fightpads as they do fightsticks and leverless controllers. Because of that, fightpad options are very limited. @RushG nope at least not for the Xbox version you have LT LB on the right and LSB RSB on the left. And software keeps you from rebinding all the buttons on the controller. The layout might be ok for fighting games I just wanted a controller that would be a good universal controller for retroarch. Something with a six button layout so I could toggle a profile and play Sega Genesis games. Then hit a button and swap to an N64 profile on the controller hit the button again and I have a 6 button fightpad for arcade games. All without messing with the standard x input layouts built into retroarch so I can still plug in a regular Xbox controller without having to remap everything. My use case is a bit different but I think fighting game players would also like to have a six face button pro controller that's fully hardware remapable with easy to use software and is capable of storing profiles in the controller.

Watching your long and frustrating quest for the perfect pad is one of the big reasons I went leverless Just wait for some company to get all these points right and then have trash durability or something smh...

@@RenanRF77 I feel I should have made the switch myself a long time ago but I'm also a firm believer that pad is easy on the hands and also allows for very quick reactions. May have been a foolish pursuit but I am hoping the new Hori Octa fixes all of these problems 🤞

This is a big reason why I haven't fully transitioned from Smash to traditional fighting games. The official Nintendo GameCube controller is a accessible, reliable and affordable controller for the game. I just wish there was an equivalent for traditional fighting games, as I don't really want to invest extra money for a leverless or stick controller.

Leverless controllers are like under 70$ now from haute42. The barrier to entry doesn't really exist. Also if you want to play on pad, analog is a real choice. There are plenty of high-level players that use analog on ps5 (example : broski) and Xbox (endingwalker) Don't let your method of input hold you back!

Im all about the cross shape dpads. SNES was probably the best for fighting games.

Why don’t u just make this controller, make a ton of money, and give me 1% for spurring you to do this?

Whiff punishing in SF6 is really tough. Does require practice. I'll look into a video guide 👌
