Quite a few people have asked for dimensions so that they can build their own screens, so I've put together a Google Drive folder with some basic measurements: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1dR8S2eIfy-wCsEBbWg4obzjpDWqslT9I?usp=sharing Enjoy!

That's slick! Two of my passions in one video! Wood working and D&D! Love the idea of using magnets for a removable frame border for inserts.... brilliant! Nicely done!

This is by far your best video. The editing seems to have leveled up faster than your DnD players.

Very cool looking! How has it held up? I'm not a woodworker by any means, but have heard the "don't glue pieces crossgrain unless you want a crack" enough times to always pay attention to it in others' projects and be curious of how much leniency there actually is. Please note that I'm not calling you out, just lookin to learn where the limits are so as not to end up overthinking these kinds of projects. The theory is, that once the wood on the main panel dries, it will want to shrink across the grain (widthwise). The one vertical framing strips is glued across the panels grain but the framing will not shrink along its grain (lengthwise), causing tension to build in the panel and potentially resulting in a crack to form next to the strip. I'd be surprised if the glue joint itself failed. If one wanted to avoid this conundrum completely, the framing would have to be left floating at least on one end.

Good question! That's definitely a rule of thumb worth paying attention to, and wood movement is absolutely something I consider when coming up with a design. There are a few factors that influence it though (a couple of which made me feel confident gluing cross-grain in this instance). The first is that different species of wood experience different levels of wood movement, and black walnut is definitely on the stable side. The second is that total wood movement is calculated across both the tangential (width) and radial (thickness) planes. Because the wood was so thin I felt it was pretty safe to glue it in the way that I did, and sure enough it's held up totally fine! If I were working on something thicker - say a tabletop for instance - then I definitely would have looked at other options.

So are you making these to order, or....? Amazing work!!

VERY NICE JOB! it seems like a good design, however IMO the 'zigzag' hinge design is a bit odd. IMO a DM screen should 'circle' around the DM when it sits on a table. concave angles, if you will. love the design tho.

Do you have any plans or rough dimensions for this? I've looked at a lot of screens (rather build one than buy one) and this seems to be the best one so far without getting too wild. I've never DMed before so I like the idea of being able to easily change things out on the fly, and the players have a place for things that they need to check regularly. I love the initiative tiles too. Helps with tabletop clutter when playing in a small space.
@KyleMerriman2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you like it! Sorry, I don't have any plans - when I build stuff like this I tend to design and dimension things on the fly, but if you have any specific questions around dimensions or techniques that weren't covered in the video then I'm happy to help! Shoot me an email at kyle@merrimanwoodworks.com and I can answer any questions you might have.

What finish did you use on the maple to allow dry erase marker use?

I experimented with a few, but eventually ended up just using a piece of clear packing tape, cut down to the maple's outer edges

Can I kindly ask you the file with the tables that you see in the first panel of your screen (7.53)? I really need a file to enclose in a panel that encloses the main tables/rules. TY 😊
