One of the easiest-to-understand rig videos I’ve seen. Well done.

I moved to Richmond from Oakland, CA last August. I have been looking for something to occupy some time and get me out around the area. I watched a few of your videos and decided shad fishing would be ideal. Thanks to your advice I caught my first 2 American shad today, my first was pretty nice 22ish inches. Thanks so much I am have a great time and have learned a lot!

Haha thats awesome Andrew! Very happy I could help ya find something to do outdoors with your time :) The shad can be a lot of fun and not too expensive on gear! Thank you for the support and welcome to RVA!

Nice. When making the surgeons loop for the dart you could tie the loop 1st and then run the loop through the dart eye making it easy to change the dart size or color similar to a dropper loop.
@ZackBostick Жыл бұрын
Very true! Thanks for sharing :) I do that on other set ups but when fishing for shad, most of the time, the color isn’t a big factor.
@johnhemmer9930 Жыл бұрын
True, but sometimes the eye of the dart is so small, it’s a PIA to thread it through.

Coming up there soon from southern VA. Gonna try that out for sure! Braid or mono for main line, and what # test?
@ZackBostick3 жыл бұрын
Awesome Charles! Either, I choose 6 or 8 mono just because some people like to cast on top of ya, and the tangles arent as bad. If im flipping the fish up at say ancarrows, Ill go 10.

Bro, I’ve been looking everywhere for Nungesser gold spoons over the last couple years and they have been impossible to find. Bought a few off eBay that were so old the hooks ended up breaking after a couple catches. None of the sporting goods stores can tell me why they don’t stock them like they used to. Do you have any idea why they have become such a rarity? Blame COVID like everything else?
@ZackBostick2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha! Well partly does seem to be a part of it. Tons of the local tackle places around here shut down recently. But I had to get them from Bass Pro or Cabelas. Since they are so pricey, I bought a bunch of eBay knock offs to see how they did and they ended up working pretty well!

Do you usually add weight to this rig, and if so, how much do you suggest using? I've been throwing something similar with 1/2 oz weight above it and the current still takes it downstream.
@danheretick3 жыл бұрын
I mean, it's no big deal and I still got my first shad last week, but the spots are getting busy and I'm worried about interfering with other anglers' lines.
@ZackBostick3 жыл бұрын
Great question! The way not to interfere with others is just watch when they are casting. In rivers, generally you cast a bit upstream and retrieve while it drifts down the current. You want to cast at the end of thier retrieve/before they go out (the person who is fishing next to you, upstream). It is kind of hard to explain. But it is also up to them to watch out and be curtious to you.
@ZackBostick3 жыл бұрын
I do add weight given the situation. If the water is very shallow I will run it weightless. If the water is deeper/fish are deeper or further, I will add a bit of weight. .5 is great. I would be using that in slightly deeper spots. If you are fishing very deep and want to cover a lot of ground, Ive used up to 2 ozs. Keep in mind, if the retrieve isnt fast enough or the water is deep enough, snags will happen.
@danheretick3 жыл бұрын
@@ZackBostick Yeah, that makes sense. I tend to shy away from areas where other people are fishing, since I don't have a lot of confidence in my casting.
@danheretick3 жыл бұрын
@@ZackBostick Thanks for the replies. I've been at ancarrows landing and it seems pretty deep and the river was running pretty fast. I was getting more hits letting it sink and slow rolling

Mostly use 1/24 or 1/16 for hickory. Much larger for the american shad :)
