@oceanbytez8475 жыл бұрын
Yeah its strong material... So is tungsten which is used for lightbulb filaments... A very small amount of a strong material is still weak. It is simply stronger than the same object made of other materials. A lot of graphene will however be very strong. Btw diamond is actually pretty weak. It is hard, not strong. It can be easily crushed or shattered from strong impacts but due to its hardness makes great drills or other friction based tools that wear things down. Graphene is a different material with different uses. primarily electrical uses i would think due to its low electrical resistance.
@vitthaltiwary44365 жыл бұрын

@@oceanbytez847 you see Graphene as a single atom thick sheet is very strong I quote " it is so strong that it can withstand an elephant standing on a pencil " end quote a scientist ( i dont remember his name, I am very forgetful when it comes to names ). Graphene is pretty strong as well, but not hard as in case of dimond as you have said, it has multiple implication out side the electricals industry due do is strength it can be used elsewhere also. When you stack up Graphene it just becomes graphite and loses its abilities, so if in your endavour to make it stronger you are stacking more Graphene sheets and doing just the opposite. Yours sincerely

It should be noted that diamond is significantly hard, which doesn’t equal durable. This means that if you distribute the diamond thinly (such as in the form of a sheet) it will be extremely brittle, and therefore less durable than something like steel, which is softer and will bend rather than break when under force.

if you guys want an easier and faster way to amass large quantities of graphene (although it wont be as pretty as having a wide independant sheet of it in quartz) You get a 99 dollar 5 watt laser etcher from somewere. These lasers typically do wood art, but if you draw onto Kapton tape with it, it produces porous graphene in a few passes. This type of graphene is flash graphene (As opposed to "tape graphene"). Flash graphene produces among the higher qualities of graphene, being double and single layer. You can use the graphene as-is and draw circuits and supercapacitor terminals onto the tape, or scrape off the powder to use as an additive for composite materials. Graphene additives can improve the properties of: Concrete, expanding foams, resin, ABS plastic, Metal alloys, and just about anything else that turns into a solid after being a liquid. Graphene does not disperse in a water gasoline mixture, and thats how you can tell if you have graphite or not - since graphite does try disperse, but graphene either remains as clumpy flakes or silver bubbles. Graphene disperses better in goopy mixes. I have a challenge for those who go out and buy a laser etcher to try this out with: Be the first to make graphene enhanced oobleck. Currently nobody has done it, but yet people out there are concerned with oobleck having "bullet proof properties" which may only be possible with a graphene additive.

Did you know, diamonds, although they ARE the hardest mineral on earth, they’re NOT the *strongest* mineral on earth? In fact diamonds are actually one of the weakest minerals on earth!! It’s because they’re so hard!!! Let me explain: Glass is a pretty hard substance, harder than plastic, and sure it would feel pretty painful if someone hit you with a glass bottle where is a plastic bottle wouldn’t hurt as much. That’s hardness. However if you were to throw the two bottles at the wall the glass bottle would shatter instantly and the plastic bottle would survive just fine! That is strength!
@VoltisArtАй бұрын
You left out what the strongest mineral IS. ;) Craig McClarren on Medium offers the strongest "rock" as being "banded iron formation", or BIF, a combination of quartz and hematite mineral layers. Hematite is natural iron oxide, (not rust in this form, but it's dense hardcore twin brother) and will kick the butt of most tools you could throw at it. I've seen nephrite jade and zircon mentioned elsewhere. People are talking about zircon grains lasting billions of years, surviving through multiple inclusions in other rock formations across eons. Tool-wise, it's hard....heh....to beat tungsten carbide.

@MiszuFiszu4 жыл бұрын
As you said, graphite is multiple layers of graphene, however these layers are not connected as strongly as the carbon atoms in each particular layer (which is what gives graphene its great strength), so they are able to "slide" against one another, making it much easier to break a piece of graphite than just one layer of strongly bound carbon atoms
