Handmade out of two small pieces of bamboo. Sounds very impressive. In this video I show you how I made it.

This instrument is called sipsi. Sipsi is a clarinet-like, single-reed instrument used mainly in folk music and native to the Aegean region of Greece and Turkey. So its possible that the maltesian discovered for themselfs from the greeks. The word sipsi is possibly onomatopoeic. The sipsi can be made of bone, wood, or reed, though the reed variant is most common. Its size varies from region to region, but it generally contains five finger holes in the front, and one finger hole in the back. The sipsi is one of many reed instruments in Turkey used to play lead melodies in instrumental folk music. It is generally played in the Western partin the Aegean Region of Turkey. Most folk tunes played in this area with the sipsi are in 9/8 time.

This type of woodwind instrument can be found in the Mediterranean and Near East, and the sipsi has existed in Turkey for thousands of years. The Phoenicians had a big trade network covering all of the Mediterranean and in ancient times they might have taken this kind of woodwind instrument to different places, including Malta. The Greeks had the _aulos_ and this one might have also reached Malta, either from Greece or from their trading posts in Sicily.

In China, there are also two similar clarinet verticle instruments: the Qiang di (Qiang flute) of the Qiang nationality and the Dong Dong Kui of the Tujia nationality. They have common characteristics: a single inverse reed being cut at the closed bottom of the instrument though Qiangdi is double-piped while Dong Dong Kui is single-piped. When playing with the tools, you should wrap the top (open end) of the reed by your mouth. In my point of view, in a broad sense, all of them are clarinets, just like the Zummara and the modern clarinet in the orchestra. These instruments may have common ancestors.

There is a similiar instrument like that from Tapanuli selatan, Sumatera Utara, Indonesia. It called Saleot. But saleot has 5 hole note. My suggest is, you need to make more thin in the end of reed (in the back of bamboo). And need more patient to make it.

the mouthpiece is 5-6 cm long. the mouth side is blocked. On the top you have to cut a membrane part. so when you blow, the air only goes through that part and creates the sound

I'm collecting videos to design my own musical instrument based on a mirliton. I hadn't considered a reversed reed (air hole forward). It has a surprisingly low tonal range. This may help - thanks for the video.
