Hey guys, this is a video I've wanted to make for years, but I could never justify putting the time into it since Fe4 isn't a super popular game. However, I decided to say "screw it" and make it anyway, and had so much fun editing this, I hope you'll have as much fun watching it. ​@@iLegault Some subs are better than the actual kids. Even then, All have their strength/weaknesses. While Ayra subs are way worse Arena and Slayer units, the Ayra subs are much more reliable because they can't easily Juggernaut. While Yes, you can always play with enemy ranges to face a fixed number of enemies each turns, Gen 2 is full of mounted squads that can easily swarm and gang up a foot unit without a leg ring (And the leg ring will be a Seliph exclusive if you value your sanity).

Arden is surprisingly NOT a very good choice in a run of trying to make the worst children ever. His children's strength growth will just be too high to be bad. And if you make him the dad of the two mages by pairing him with Tailtu, guess what... they have the almighty Vantage+Wrath combo. So at the end of the day, it becomes really hard to make Arden a bad dad

The funny thing is, even with 5% MAG, Ced is still quite workable. Sage's 15 base MAG is so good that Ced can still fight competently with Light or Elwind (with 29 ATK this is still a reliable 3HKO on physical enemies even into the Endgame, so a single Adept will do), and if anything the extra HP/DEF just makes him a better front-line unit with Shield Ring, better than Hawk by quite a good margin. What you are actually missing out on is status staff utility, as only a Sage (or Dark Bishop or Emperor or Queen or Dark Prince or unit with Valflame) can use a status staff on Endgame Ishtar due to MAG cap problems. Ordinarily Hawk can get to 28 MAG 100% reliably, but this Ced probabilistically will not.

Wow it’s been 10 years since the FE4 Subsitute Run? This whole comparison video feels like a follow up to it, I bet this video took a lot of tome and dedication which is very respectable, FE4 is one of my absolute favorites in the series and seeing how you’ve tried making worse Gen 2 units than the Subs really was a fun watch and I bet a fun project for yourself, I love all the beautiful art you showcased of every unit upon introduction, some of the Subs also have funny names such as Radney and Rodlbahn, but I love how Fire Emblem has its own Daisy like Mario does lol.

The weird thing with Patty and Faval is because they "switched" the parents - normally, the female child inherits full growths + blood + items from the mother and half growths + blood from father, and vise versa for the male child. But with Patty and Faval, Faval inherits fully from his mother, and Patty's "primary parent" is her father.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I did all sorts of pairings in the game, but these are just laughably dreadful. Which puts into perspective at how insane the kids are because some like Ced may be gimped horribly, but are carried purely by their bases and weapons. Also we love seeing Linda appreciation here, I used her one time and she completely impressed me!

I'm opposed to that idea, the entire appeal of the substitute units is that they are bad compared to the regular children, and seeing a story with your zeroes going down the road of becoming heroes is always something really satisfactory to see (unless you decide to throw seliph to all your problems and call it a day)

I did this in Radiant Dawn, it was fun. Basically a self-draft with the bottom half of the tier list. Some units like Astrid and Lyre actually ended up decent. Others like Kyza and Fiona were kinda bad even after babying them for so long. It’s a different experience when you ban yourself from using the good units!

I have a script rotting on my computer that I wrote years ago where I analyzed every single FE4 pairing, and in the process I actually entertained this thought exercise. The main difference between our methodologies is that I didn't disallow weapon inheritance. Sadly, the conclusion is ultimately that almost every substitute is clear cut worse than their non-sub counterpart once you allow weapon inheritance. Here's my findings: Aideen - Dimna is actually quite competent and absolutely better than the worst Lesters, but Mana not getting Staff Inheritance makes unpaired Aideen the definite worst option. Ayra - Substitute = No Astra, instantly worse Lachesis - Substitute = No Charm, instantly worse Lene - Laylea and Sharlow are actually pretty decent. I was thinking pretty similar to you with Jamke, but I chose Midir due to having basically the same shit but with a 15% lower HP and 5% lower Def growth. Does Pursuit even matter with stats like those? Erinys - Yeah, you could probably make a worse Ced than Hawk, but Hermina is unsalvageable compared to the worst Fee. Tailtiu - Linda is actually kinda cracked and may debatably be better than even the best Tine due to unpromoted Thoron access on top of the great skills. Does it make up for Amid being in a classline that doesn't get a mount, unlike Arthur? Lol no, unpaired is the worst. Brigid - Substitute = No Yewfelle, instantly worse. Shoutouts to Daisy, though, because Miracle on a Thief is insanely good and made me realize that Finn!Patty is a genuinely fantastic pairing despite Finn losing his Lances in 2nd Gen if paired. I remember on my FE4 Sub Run I made boatloads of money in Chapter 9 by using Daisy with a magic sword to rob all the Javelin Dracoknights.

I'm honestly surprised that Midir didn't show up at _all,_ with having some of the worst growth rates in the entire game. I feel he'd be interchangeable with Beowolf on Erinys, but I suppose that 10% extra speed growth he gets over Beo _would_ make the latter the better (worse?) option. Midir'd probably be the worse father for Ced, while Beowolf is worse for Fee; but it's still a tough race there. I _am_ glad that Dew didn't appear here. His growths are pretty respectable by FE4 standards, and Bargain's never a bad skill to have, even if his children can't use Sol. Nihil _can_ be useful on Fee since it removes her bow-weakness, since effective weapons _are_ critical damage in FE4. Either her or a cav unit of some kind if you're just really afraid of Horseslayers for some reason, but mostly Fee. Downside there is that the only option for Nihil is from Alec, and he's actively detrimental to Ced

tbf the only Ceds that are better than Hawke are the magical dads lol (that’s just how good Hawks is as a baseline.) There’s also another thing that can make both set of units stronger - lover convos in the lategame. I don’t think it’s that big of a difference but with the secret event + lover convo Hawks gets nearly capped magic from that alone which is funny lol. Individually speaking, there are worst pairings for each kid specifically but sometimes that usually makes the other kid stronger lol (like Adean x Claud making a decent Lena but a horrendous Lester whose only upside is having enough res that he actually get to the threshold to not get status’d at Blaggi Castle in endgame LOL.)

That's a pretty *noish* video Mangs I would disagree with Arthur and Amid though. Sure, Amid is strictly speaking a better combat unit than the worst Arthur, but I feel like you're a bit underestimating the value of the Mage Knight class. This is FE4, cavalry is king, high movement + canto is huge. Even if Arthur's combat is pretty terrible, at the very least he's going to be modestly contributing on the frontlines. Amid on the other hand is is never going to keep up with Seliph, Ares, Oifey and so on, he just never amounts to anything. And on top of that he basically has to sacrifice his chapter 8 if you want to get his special event. Anyway, that was pretty fun, kinda want to try this run now!

it is only a break if BridgetXLewyn doesnt follow this. It is more so that Bridget is the abnormaly where the son follows the mother rather than father, similiar to Quan and Leif, but since QuanXEthlyn is fixed we wont know what will happen if we pair Quan with someone else.

The implied inheritance method seems to only care about the sex of the parents (Father tries to pass on (Major) Holy Blood before the Mother) and the order the kids are born. (Yes, I know, it is not our Mendelian inheritance genetics, but as a molecular biologist/geneticist I do like to figure out fictional inheritance systems)

Only one i might disagree with is arthur vs amid. Having a horse in FE4 is so much of a boon. Finally done watching the video. This was really fun, However, I think you are SEVERELY underestimating Accost in you pairings. I disagree that Ced, Tinny , Arthur and possibly Caipre are worst because they have Accost, Which has the small chance to kill units at Range due to how Accost can proc another round of Combat. This is even worse with Ced, who can kill even more easily due to Pursuit. Yeah, Low magic sucks, but it doesn't matter if enemies don't have much Res to begin with. With Caipre, Sharlow will only kill weakened enemies when promoted, but Caipre has a solid chance to kill with his Magic thanks to Accost when conditions are met. Also a small note for Azelle/Ulster: Astra is pretty strong and that would be his clutch, but he will become around Equal footing to his sub, but I do agree that his sub is the better unit in the end, just barely edging out, but not by much I will say that the 5 characters you did not manage to make worst are almost impossible to make worst, so my focus on my list is to make some units even worse than yours, while also making their "Cost" be as high as possible. Here is my list for the TRUE worst Pairings IMO: Ayra/Alec: While Azelle is already a good way to sabotage Ayra's Kids, It's nearly impossible to sabotage them further. While Alec is a physical unit, I will say that he gives NO SKILLS to his children because their children already have Nihil and Pursuit, so it's a waste. Yeah, This pretty much makes Ulster better than his sub 100% (And so will Larcei), but the gap wasn't that big to begin with and it's a small cost to make worse kids. Claude would probably be the worst, but Claude grants good res, so they become MAGE KILLERS. Aideen/Azel: This pairing is trash. Yes, Lester gets pursuit, but unlike Claude/Aideen (Which is meta because:) that can let Lara carry Rescue staff for the entire generation, Lana cannot Inherit it, even though Azelle can still gift it to Aideen in chapter 4. It's like the Devs are trolling unsuspecting players and first timers will be confused on why they lost the best utility staff in gen 2 (You can inherit it with Claude/Sylvia or Claude/Erin, but that's too much effort and you pay for 2 pairing what is normally price of 1). Going back to Lester: Lester will always be behind because of garbage strenght growth. The one argument I could give as to why this is weaker than Holyn is that Lester has high skill with Holyn, which allows higher crit chance with Killer bow and much higher accuracy (Also Holyn is loaded with HP while Azelle has OK HP). Yeah, 2 chance to crit with Killed bow is strong, but 90% Skill growth compared to 30% is huge. Also keep in mimd that Lest has much lower strength (20% over 40%), so the damage will be worse on crit. Biggest issue is that it makes Lana very strong with Pursuit, but it's a small price to pay to make Lester even worse, as it's impossible to make Lana worse than Muirne. Lewyn was considered, but Crit and adept might make Lester have a better fighting edge at times (Remember, Lester can use the Silver bow, which is Higher might than Killer bow, so crits can be much better;I find the Azelle pairing funnier as well. Also Lana will still be strong because she will be thanks to a magic father and her worst magic dad would be Claude). Erin/Holyn: This is pretty much a worse version of Erin/Beowulf because No Accost, which is what I wanted. I could Have Given Claude, but not only will that grant Valkyrie staff to Ced, Ced becomes Busted as well. This is definitely worse than Beowulf though (Except for HP and skill, but hey, Fee gets 5% less strength growth).I think I could have also used Finn or Dew, but Finn gives Miracle, which can be strong with proper math, and Dew grants Bargain, which is insanely broken as this unit can always "Borrow" Rings without losing gold (They sell rings at the same price they buy them). Also did you know that Lewyn Waste Adept on Ced and inneficiently gives it to Fee because Fee would have got Adept in promotion? Tailtyu/Dew: I know I literally just said how broken Bargain is, but hear me out: Dew has the worst survivability for the two children and grants them no offensive skills. Holyn grants Meme levels of skill growth (Over 100% LMAO), but that also affects HP, which is something. 100% growths are meme worthy and all that, but's it's guaranteed stat every level, which is super strong, especially when the tomes (Eventually) have crit. While yes, Holyn should probably be here, The real reason is that I'm writing this in 1AM and getting sleepy, so yeah. (also the whole point is to remove Accost, which makes them decent combat units at range) Briggid/Claude: Yeah, This one is unbeatable, I'll just say why Azelle would be Second place. Azelle's Pursuit is Useless for Febail because Febail has pursuit, so a Bow unit with a magic growth would be uselesd. I will say Azelle does grant a 60% speed growth over Claude's 40% Which is something. Patty with Pursuit would be useful to have two chances to steal, but she still won't kill and it would make her marginally better at the arena, so it's not a good pairing, but Claude is Bottom of the Barrel, except that he is the MAGE KILLER daddy. Lachesis/Lewyn: There is no way to make Lachesis' children unviable thanks to Charm and Hezul granting solid strength, but this Pairing not only (Mostly) Ruins their defenses (Except Nanna), it also forces a player to lose out Forseti (if they were not following the Zero Inheritance rule). Also Dermott only gets Early Adept and Critical, so it's not the most efficient adept Inheritence. Critical is strong, but I will say Every unit can get crit with weapons with 50 kills (And Effective weapons always crit against effective targets), so the Skill can easily lose relevancy. Also Vantage can be a very strong Enemy Phase skill when used in the right hands and with planned out math So I try to avoid Inheriting it if possible for this cause. Conclusion: Overall, I love FE4's inhertence system for how fun it makes Gen 2 feel like a "Choose your own adventure" type of gameplay. You can make bad units that are fun to use or just make god units that makes Gen 2 look like a joke. Even then, some of the worst fathers have their unique niches, which is pretty cool for "Meta discussion". Inheritence adds replayabily to an already unique game which is why FE4 is my Game of All Time.

Forgot the Sylvia Kids: so here you go: Sylvia/Arden: While it gives the kids good physical survivability, They both lose out on a lot of useful stuff. Yeah, I did say Vantage could be strong, but to calculate a best case use for Vantage for the kids is nearly impossible because they have C rank weapons, so good luck leaving enemies in such low HP where it matters. I was thinking Finn, but both get pursuit which would be too useful, so I went lazy and went for Arden because Vantage is seen as a weak skill, but can be strong in the right hands, just that these kids don't have good weapon ranks to have such good hands (One can't even attack until promoted). Lex would be almost as bad but Paragon is OP.

Always a fan of these kinds of challenges instead of "Can you beat the game by not engaging with the game?" challenges. Not that those can't be fun, single class/weapon/etc can be incredibly fun to watch or play, but this makes you play the game in a completely different way while still using everything the game intends you to use. Plus, always fun to see FE content.

That's why I love baby-making in FE games. The support system and characterizing just bear fruit to this so naturally, and as a strategy gameplay mechanic that takes place in generational main plot, having babies just make sense. I wish the majority of upcoming FE games to have children units. Speaking of generational main plots, I am currently playing Romancing Saga 2 Remake and that game is SO fun. I recommend everyone new to RS series give it a try.

Yes I am aware, it's an oversimplification. When it comes to magic crits, they essentially double your damage because 90% of all enemies have single-digit resistances.
