That double sided tape on sticking board is a fantastic solution. Trying the hold a thin strip on the sticking board with sufficient reference surface for the fence, and able to provide clearance for the plane, and withstand the forces of planing action, is something I have never found a good solution. I will try this next time.

For the last few days I've been making some complex and simple mouldings for a project. At the same time I've been thinking about smoothing the back of the moulding. ESP. That's all I've got 🤔🤫🤣

Thanks, these videos make me wish I had 55 to play with, I only have a 45.

i have a 45 and its all i want

While the 55 is very versatile it has a significant failing: it has no tight mouth. For that reason it can be prone to tear out. If I can use my moulding planes then that's what I reach for first for complex shapes.

I just finished making a bunch of picture frame molding. Each stick is 2.3m long, which brings up an interesting point that I rarely see anyone address on how-to videos: how to plane long moldings. Most people show short little bits that don't require you to walk from one side of the shop to the other when planing. I'd be interested in seeing how you would tackle such a job.

The one I made in the vid is about one meter long. If I needed 2.3m long molding, I would probably make it the same way with a longer sticking board and place tape at the midpoint as well. Then, just work it one section at a time so you're not walking back and forth.

Thank you for your clear demonstration. When I try to use double sided tape to hold wood down I find I can’t cleanly remove the tape from the support surface. Is this a sign of poor quality tape or is there some trick I can use?

Yes, all double sided tape is not the same. Some tape is made to be permanent, you can't use that type. I use intertape from the intertape polymer group. Here's the website. www.itape.com It's super strong, but removable. And, you can peel the paper backing off very easily.
