This is a great way of using all those random shaped and freeform stones that you've collected over the years.

I recently got an order from an indonesian guy of some great material, but most of the cabs have uneven sides, rounded backs etc that are gonna take some creativity (such as you've demonstrated here) to set. Thanks for some great ideas!

Videos going into the details of setting up a business and setting prices would be very welcome. The dialogue is complicated (esp on FB groups) by the fact that a lot of people do this who don't have a make a living doing it, so they can easily undercut people who DO need to make a living. The various formulas offered for pricing are really vague, or simplified such that it would lead to zero profit.

@paulknapp2223 I am. Born and bred. When I move workshop in a few weeks, I'll be officially naming my actual business and linking the two in a reveal video type thing. I grew up in Strood but grandparents lived not far from brands hatch. As little kids we used to park outside on the green and watch the racing at weekends. That was of course before the building was in the way. I'm talking late 80s early 90s. Only time I've been to brands in recent years is the classic bike racing and end of season lorry racing.

@paulknapp2223 I do actually do experience day where jewellers come and learn more. I had just got so busy, I had to put the price up because I wasn't selling any metal on the day and it was stopping me earning from retail pieces. When I do the workshop reveal thing and website, all the two and three day courses will be on the price list. I actually just checked the map. I'm only 35 minute drive from Brands Hatch.

Great project, Ydna! I do this combo as often as I can. Lots of gold (22k, or sometimes 18k) on silver. Amd yes, I do have some of these stones. In fact, I have one that is very similar shape to this pieces'. It is a gorgeous piece of Gem Silica (gem Chrysocolla) with an entire large vug space with crystals - all in that gorgeous aqua blue! I can't wait to get it out and make a setting in this videos style. I have a question for you. I have both the Badeco Swiss hammer hand-piece and the Foredom. I use the Badeco because it's the Rolls-Royce of hammer hand-pieces, but I find that at even maximum percussion, it is not as percussive as I want/need to move metal (like your Foredom seems to). Have you ever tried both and compared them? I got the Badeco brand new, but I think it might not be performing at capacity. Any thoughts? Thank you!
@metalofhonour
@metalofhonour 7 ай бұрын
@flyingcheff always a great colour combo. I love it. Your stones sound good. It's honestly been over 20 years since I've used a Badeco drill, so sadly I just can't remember. But if it's any use, I always have this on the medium setting. It could even be down to the tip. I trimmed this to be quite slim on the tip. This can be a big help.
@flyingcheff
@flyingcheff 7 ай бұрын
@metalofhonour Thanks so much. I am going to do some comparison tests. Perhaps my Badeco (it's a hammer hand-piece, not a drill) is underperforming. Perhaps it needs an adjustment. I make all my own tips for it - and my Foredom). I'll DM you a picture of my stone and its adventures. It's great to have a "gathering place" online to show your followers' pieces. Do you have a common meeting place for that? Patreon would be a suggestion. Are you on IG? Where would you like to receive DM's?
@metalofhonour
@metalofhonour 7 ай бұрын
@flyingcheff probably a like for on same piece would be a useful controlled test for that. In a few weeks, I'll be doing my website reveal along with my actual business. I'm hoping to get a forum page put on that would allow the community to chat and exhibit their work. Also long term I'll probably do the KZbin Memberships platform. Patreon was something I looked a briefly too, which could be an option.

I’m trying to set cameo. By hand is not working well. Do you think a flex shaft hammer attachment is gentle enough? I have had some fracture lines. Also thinking of getting a gsr.
@metalofhonour
@metalofhonour 6 ай бұрын
@glendaowoc9576 a few of my videos do show how I use by hand only. Following the video style is good, you just need to be careful not to damage your wrist. Your hands will get stronger. Hammer hand piece can be as gentle as you need and very safe. They can be adjusted on the handpiece too. I'd recommend some eye magnification though, as it really helps to get that visual of how close you actually are. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
